I was practice panning using a manual focus lenses on sunday at the local track meet.
Didn't see genji out there, shame the photos didn't turn out too well due to the blown reflections, i got quoted on a drop in filter today for 450$aud omg and i thought the rm90 was expensive!!!!!!

I think you've got some good shots despite the problems (1, 4 & 5 are best for me), but I've got whiplash from turning from side to side to view the shots. Don't you EVER do ones that are horizontal?

What lens was the drop in filter for? Sometimes they are seen second hand. At $450 you would be tempted to buy a new lens, though it is probably a 500 f4 or similar

Thanks redline. I guess this is a good example of why I commented on the plethora of angled shots. In the angled version the big thing you notice is the angle of the shot since it's not something we see in real life (even when we tilt our head our brain "sees" a horizontal image since our ear canals tell our brain our head is tilted). In the straight version the car speed in the corner is more noticeable (ie we subconsciously "see" the suspension is lower on the left than the right and our brain says - he's cornering pretty fast)

Does this make sense? BTW I'm not totally against angled shots - they have their place, but, like much in photography you don't want to over use the "special effects"

redline, those photos look good to me, except for the angle - I don't like the angle shot as a general rule. Maybe one per year because special circumstances apply, and even then, I'm not so sure.

I think it detracts from your work - you are getting in there and getting good motorsport shots, you don't need angles. Give the angles the old heave ho.

AHH motorsport.... a folly but one I love. There are some good shots amongst this bunch here Redline. The open-wheeler I like the best. Angled frames work fine for me. Have you ever tried pointing the lens at motorcycle racing - or not your scene? Thanks for sharing this lot!

i guess iam part of that minority group who like the "angled" shots.
i use it to stimulate the when drivers tilt their heads as they complete a turn. and it just adds a different perceptive to the usual pan.

i haven't really done any motorcycle stuff. there just not enough of it in my area i guess. having calder,and sandown within 1/2 hour to 1 hour drive.

Hi Redline,

Which part of Melb. are you from? I guessed if Calder Park was close-ish then maybe Broadford might be within your reach?

I used to race with Hartwell MCC. They host the Victorian Road Racing Titles at Broady - this next weekend - Feb. 26th/27th. Then there is the Historic Motorcycle Titles at Broady March 19th/20th. Then there is the Hartwell Club Championship round at Broady on April 23rd/24th. Being from Melb. I'm sure you know where Broadford is. The Vic State Titles are a very high standard of racing - often being contested by interstate riders too. Riders such as Mc Coy, Gobert, Corser, Vermuellin, Mc Karthy, Bayliss, Fergusson, Curtain, Giles etc have all contested the Vic. State titles over the years. There are several good vantage points out at Broadford - you will not be sorry you made the trip!

On a second glance i like your images even more. Never mind the blow -outs, there's always next meet.

to be honest i never heard of broadford, it it a race track there. i wouldn't mind going but iam working this weekend as iam having the entire mon - fri off to do some assignment work. did you have any club contacts that would allow some shot to be done.

Redline, it's been quite a while since I was a member of Hartwell MCC. I'm sure they would have no issues with you turning up to a meeting to phorograph proceedings. In my day there was always one or two photogs with semi serious gear taking shots. I expect you should be able to sell some images at the meeting. I purchased a pair of prints from a fellow who snapped me overtaking a bike at Phillip Island.

Broadford Park is just 4 min. north of the township of Broadford on the Hume Hwy, about one hour north of Melb. There is a bitumen road racing circuit there and a big motocross track. The road circuit is very tight and up and down so you can shoot flat across the straight, up into some corners or down onto a heap of places. You can shoot from very close to the edge of the track in some spots. They race all sorts of bikes from 125cc up to the superbikes (1,000cc) and sidecars. Plenty of overtaking etc.
