Is there such a thing as a clickable watermark?

Postby Glen on Thu Jul 03, 2008 10:36 pm

I just wondered if anyone knew of something like a clickable watermark or button you could embed in a jpg so someone viewing the picture could click on it and be whisked away to a website?

If this hasn't been invented remember your read about it here first

Absolutely but I’m too tired to elaborate.

Glen,

I'm happy for Chris to tell me otherwise, but I don't think it is possible to do what I think you are thinking.

I assume you want to be able to embed something into a JPEG file so that wherever it goes the link will work. I think it is only possible to achieve that with html around the image and not in the image itself which means if someone lifted the image an put it on their own site, the linking wouldn't work.

If you control the html, it can be done with an image map.

Andrew, you have hit the nail on the head. I have noticed a few of my website images appearing around the web, would be nice if they linked back to my site. Geez, if this was possible I would imagine the dozen or so russian girls who send me their photo every day would be doing it. Chris is a man of mysterious ways so we may see something unexpected here :)

Andrew is absolutely correct, it was late :?

But, what I was thinking at the time relates to this gem and the use of meta data:

But it’s the wrong way round :?

Glen

A couple of thoughts ... (I know, I'm living dangerously)

You can use some code to try to disable a right click on the image. That sort of thing mostly works, and that can help prevent some people from downloading the images ...

As a secondary thought, are you perhaps able to swap the jpg image for something like a PDF? If you do that, then you can lock your URL into the PDF, and pretty much do as you're asking.

Thanks Gary, I am actually not worried about people taking the images, more that they can find me again. I just thought a clickable watermark was a better idea

That is the plan Sue, I understand you can now have a clickable link in video files, so being a certified knuckle dragging tinfoil beanie wearing luddite I thought I should drag myself into this century and do it on my photos. Pleasing to find out I am not as far behind the times as I thought :D

I can't say I warm to the idea.
Just imagine the potential for viruses/trojans if you could attach executable code to JPGs

Exporting as a jpeg sequence or a gif from flash might work...
