Lens repair-worth it or buy a new one???

Postby isusdfr on Wed Jun 11, 2008 12:59 pm

I own a pentax K100D and have just got a quote of $170 to get my Sigma 70-300mm lens repaired. The autofocus mechanism is faulty it keeps changing from manual focus to auto focus every second which makes it kind of hard to take a photo. I was wondering if it is worth paying the $170 or spend $300 to get a new identical lens.

I know that it is $150 more but it would of course have a new 12 month warranty and give me a bit more piece of mind. The repair has a 3 month warranty.

What do you guys think, would you pay half of what a lens is worth to get it repaired???
No...you cannot download a digital camera from the internet.....

I've had a $500ish lens repaired a few months ago, it costed around $215.
It feels bad when the repair price is almost half the cost of the lens

I went with the repair because a faulty lens wouldn't be of much use to me.

Does the Pentax version of this lens have a switch on it to change between MF and AF? The AF on the Nikon version is driven from the camera body motor, and you use the AF/MF selector switch on the camera.

Cheers

yeah, the switch is on the lens, it doesnt matter what you have it set to, every now and again, when you look through the viewfinder you can see it madly flicking from AF to MF and of course while this is happening you cannot take a photo.

I'd look at replacing the lens. Look at some grey prices, I am sure you will be able to dig up something on ebay, unfortunately Pentax mount lenses dont appear on all the normal places that I look otherwise I would be able to suggest a price for you.
