other ways to hang a print without it being framed?

Postby Thommo on Fri Jul 25, 2008 6:51 pm

hi everyone

Im having an exhibition soon and have just been informed that all my photos must be hung from the wall and that nothing can be stuck to the wall.

My original plan was to maybe mount them then using velcro or similar attach them to the wall.

I did a bit of a runaround today looking at frame prices and also thick gatorboard only to discover it will be over $500 for gatorboard alone (on 12x a3, i was thinking something more like 20x30inch) or over $1000 for the same framed.

Does anyone have any links to information about the print hanging sort of system or anything that might help me out.

and of course your input would be HIGHLY valued!

This makes no sense to me. How can anything be hung from the wall but not stuck to it?
I assume this means no nails etc either Technically this means stuck THROUGH it not TO it, but I'm guessing they include this too.
THe only way out of this is if they have a framing track already installed and you need to use that. If this is the case then all you need is a rigid support across the top of the picture with a cord attached to it so the hooks on their system can pick it up.
This means you would be able to use anything from a dowel across the top (tacky but it WILL work) to a full frame.

In the middle, you might try some matt board. tape a string across the back, or use some ready made frames. These work out much cheaper than custom mades, and can look good if carefully chosen. If you want the photos to look as though they are just there, try backing the photo with foam core cut the same size as the photo, then attach your string to that.

Sorry, my fault for not being clear, there is a pre existing hanging rail on the wall.

I have already looked into black gatorboard for mounting as the prints will be a considerable size and i dont want them to warp. (some thinner foam core warps out to the edges)

I guess what i should have asked is for a system that will hang prints not involving mounting or framing.

im just looking for some more options before i bite the bulliet and spend $500 odd on mounting costs!

This place seems to have gator board at reasonable prices. You may need to buy more than you want at the moment though: It seems to be a wholesaler.
