PotW July 29 2008Must be my turn, and I have to say that this is surely one of the most pleasant tasks associated with running this forum. Except, of course, for the simply fact that y'all constantly post such wonderful images, making this job almost a chore.
Almost. This week's Picture of the Week just rolled out of my Apple Mac late last week, making me all green with envy. It basically stalked me all weekend, challenging me to find an image that I preferred over this one. And that about sums up what I like about this image, from Russell Flower's recent trip to the Adelaide Markets. We have the repetition of the shapes of the apples. And their almost parallel stalks. The use of selective focus, and the sameness of the greens. You can almost taste this image. Original thread here. Well done Russell, thanx for sharing your visit to the markets with us. g.

Re: PotW July 29 2008Great image, this I imagine coudl be used as a 'stock shot' for one of the big ad agencies. It may be worth following up on that? Well done Russell! Fine choice Gazza.

Re: PotW July 29 2008I am not sure that I am allowed to say this but,
This is not the photo I would have picked as the best this week. It is a fine photo dont get me wrong but some of Big Red and Sheepies work in the outback has been simply stunning e.g. http://www.dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=33303 and http://www.dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=33318 Anyway Congratulations Russell this is a photo that I would have been proud of.
Re: PotW July 29 2008olrac, the PotW is a choice made by the selector for the week. It is chosen based on the personal view of the selector. There may
well be members who like other shots better, but that is irrelevant. Greg - - - - D200 etc

Re: PotW July 29 2008
Carlo, You most certainly are permitted to say that, but at no time ever has PotW ever pretended to be the "best" (whatever the hell that might mean) image posted here. Never has, and most likely never will. I truly have no concept of what the term "best image" might mean. In this post the criteria for the selection of PotW as laid out for all to see. Please permit me to quote from that post ...
I suggest you read that whole post: it contains some valuable information. g.

Re: PotW July 29 2008lovely image, and congrats on POTW.
I really like the isolation of the apples from anything else, and as said above, you can "taste" them!
Re: PotW July 29 2008I understand the subjective nature of the Selection process of POTW. I was more wondering if this was an appropriate place to express my opinion as I don't think I have seen occurrences of people saying anything other than congratulations etc...
Re: PotW July 29 2008
Absolutely, as long as you comply with the guidelines as stated in the post I referred to. g.

Re: PotW July 29 2008
Opinions are like butt-holes - everyone has one! With PotW, the only opinion that matters is that of the person selecting it. Most good art has some discussion and dissent; and our forums now have so many quality images posted to them each week that we could all pick a PotW and there would be many different selections. It is therefore impossible to pick a "best" image, as Gary has already said. The challenge for the selector for a particular week is to pick an image that resonates in some way for some reason. It's OK to not like it; it's OK to say you don't like it too. But it will still be PotW! I like this image because: a) I love still life images b) the image has been presented in an unusual way - narrow portrait view, narrow depth of field; good lighting c) it is a simple photograph that represents its subject artistically. My congratulations to Russell, and a fine pic, Gary. TFF (Trevor)
