3pin connector vs pc sync

Postby wendellt on Wed Jul 30, 2008 11:16 pm

hi people
does the 3 spin screw in type port on the sb800 have the same purpose as the pc sync port

reason why i ask is because the pc sync cord when inserted into the sb800 a number of times gets loose and i get connection issues
the 3 pin screw in type connector is further supported by the screw in thing so its a better solution
im just wondering if i should change over all my pocketwizard pc sync cables for the 3 pin screw in type

thanks again

Wendell,

The 3 pin screw in supports TTL whereas the PC connector is just trigger.

I'm sure you could use a 3 pin screw and only connect the ground and trigger lines.

is your existing PC-miniphone cable long enough?
where do you put your PW?

IT shouldn't come loose as often as you say - If you mount it properly and use the PW handstrap to take the weight of the PW if you hang it from your stand.

that said with PW's the weakest part of the link is often the cable, especially when they are of a cheap quality.

you could alternatively get a hotshoe to miniphone adapter for under the speedlight if your not happy with the sync port. (although it has been tried and testing by thousands of strobist users)

I wouldnt make a TTL - sync hack cable unless I knew exactly what pins did what - I wouldnt want to run the risk of damaging my PW / SB by mis-wiring.

Good luck- once your up and running... you'll wonder how you survived without them!

The PC sync connector on the SB800 is a screw-in type as well. If you use the matching connector on your cable, you won't have any trouble with loose connections.
