Canberra Meet (10 Aug, 10am@Lanyon Homestead)Okay so I've hung around the forums for a few months now...doesn't seem to be much action on the Canberra side of things. Are there people out there keen to meet and shoot?
I was hoping something would come up and then just 'tag along', especially since I'm only a beginner in the whole game and I don't like organising things...unless I have to . But it looks like I may need to pump in a bit of enthusiasm up front. So any one keen?? Or any events already in the pipeline I wasn't aware of? Re: Canberra Meet??Im keen for a meet, sundays work best for me.
As of today i have some strobist gear i can bring along that everyone can play with. not really sure what we should do though! http://flickr.com/photos/jamesthomsonphotography/

Re: Canberra Meet??Hi interest as well
Just let me know when sunday would also be good for me Tony
Re: Canberra Meet??Hi all CBRers,
yes, Id' also be interested in a meet, shoot, etc and catch up with the CBR gang - Sundays are also a preferred day. So, count me in unless some other social obligations get in the way. Let the suggestions come in the door ... Regards, Christian
Re: Canberra Meet??How much notice do you guys need? (is 6 days enough ). I think I can make pretty much any Sunday available in the next few weeks - preferences? The sooner the better really.
Meanwhile any other interested people please jump aboard! And for the important part...itinerary? I'm open to suggestions and ideas on what works best...? Morning/Late? City/Rural etc. D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: Canberra Meet??I Dont really know where to start for content for our meet.
How about everyone rattles off a few things/locations they are keen to shoot. Things im keen for and havent done (mainly due to slackness) Some bush work, landscapes, creeks, forests with a fisheye Star trails Yarra Brickworks(not sure if you can get inside it or not) Urban stuff, gritty locations around canberra Still thinking, will update as i get more http://flickr.com/photos/jamesthomsonphotography/

Re: Canberra Meet??Tidbinbilla Nature res has a range of things to shot but is about 45min drive I think. Thats ok with me
I think more on the subject and this sunday fine with me too. Tony
Re: Canberra Meet??Well these ideas sound good to me, brickworks, tidbinbilla esp. Keep the suggestions coming.
Well if Christiand is also okay with Sunday we can pencil that in. Preferred time? I would think morning generally (doesn't make for the best star trails though ) D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: Canberra Meet??
This is true, but remember that the best light is before 10am and after 3pm. tidibinbilla is fine with me also. I might bring a mate along as well. http://flickr.com/photos/jamesthomsonphotography/

Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)
These are things I don't know Well I'm fine with getting started early enough for the good light - how early is too early?. (Also fine with kicking off in the afternoon instead if that suits better). (I'm still looking for a team leader here to make these types of executive decisions!).
More the merrier! In fact I may get another dslr enthusiast to come along too if possible. D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)I think it would be best if we started at say 11 or 12 and went into the arvo, cause i know i wont be on time for anything earlier ( so bad with mornings and i have a possible shoot in a nightclub on saturday night as well!
FYI the reason the light is bad around midday is that the sun is so strong, so you get really harsh shadows, but seeing its winter it might be a little cloudy and therefore not so contrasty. any other ideas for locations? http://flickr.com/photos/jamesthomsonphotography/

Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)Hi all,
10 August would be just fine. I was also thinking about the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. What about meeting there in the morning ? The Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve has a few very nice walks - one is a reasonably short one which goes into an area with a lot of grass trees and also gives nice views accross Tidbinbilla. Another walk is what used to be the "old" wetlands walk which has been extended significantly - we might be lucky and see the Brolga. We could consider getting there in the morning and have some lunch or brekkie at the Moon Rock Cafe at the Tidbinbilla Space Tracking Station which is very close to the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (sort of a lttle further down the road and turn off to the right, if you are travelling from Point Hut). Another rural venue of interest could be the old Lanyon Homestead. The Lanyon Homestead is relativeley close for those who live on the southside but also isn't really far from the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. We could combine the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and Tidbinbilla Space Tracking Station and the old Lanyon Homestead - or part of it as time and prefernces permit. If we should meet in the morning (perhaps even at 9:00 am) at The Tidbinbilla Visitor's Centre we would have ample time to enjoy the lot. Just wear warm clothes (multipe layers and if the sun warms up the environmet, just peel away ...), a beenie and gloves - perhaps a scarf and Martha is your Auntie. Whatdayathink ? Regards, Christian
Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)Hmm. Was sounding awesome......but a thought has occurred to me - there's probably no mobile coverage in Tidbinbilla (?). Ordinarily fine with that, but my wife is 38 weeks pregnant and I don't think I could handle a great length (or any length) of time out of range...just in case. Bummer. (I've been keeping my phone charged and 'loud' at all times, always on the ready!). Does sound like a really nice outing though. I'd be keen to capture a Brolga (no no no - not capture! I mean 'shoot'...ahh...not shoot, i mean photograph.). You guys should still hit it, and I'll be happy to just join in at the Lanyon stage if that suits. Unless there's another ripper of an idea closer to the mobile towers instead of tidbin that everyone is happy with. D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)Gday,
i would definitely be interested in a future meet in and around Canberra - unfortunately i already have other commitments this weekend. However uni permitting i am usually free most of the time on weekends Jason
Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)Wow, a Canberra meet? They are like hens teeth around here!
I would love to join in, the camera is looking a little bit dusty at the moment. However..... I live on ANU (Civic) and don't have any of my own transport, so that may be a little difficult. If anyone wants a seat filled, I would be willing to help out with fuel. *grins optimistically* Any reason to take photos is good enough for me, so whatever is decided on suits me fine. Other closer options may include Black Mountain / Botanic Gardens if people are interested (I like that one as it is close ). And any time of day is good as far as I am concerned, I am free all day. Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)Tristan
I live in narrabundah I can pick you up thats no problem. More then happy to help out If anyone else want a ride let me know as well. i think tidbinbilla would be the best spot to go then lanyon homestead Thats my choice Time mid morning say 10am If everyone submits a time and place then we can go with the general consenses. Tony
Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)Hi Tony, hi all,
look, I'm pretty much open for any suggestions regarding time, venue and also date. Let us form (how, I don't quite know) a consent - lets agree on something  Shall we vote or so ? Regards, Christian
Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)Im open to pretty much anything as well, i would prefer a 10am or later start though as im slack!

Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)Well I'd have to throw my vote in for something more like Black Mountain/Botanic gardens. I admit it's not as desirable as the valleys down south, but I'm just keen to meet the friendly Canberra folk and snap a few photos - but can't stray from mobile coverage right now.
I'm fine with a 9am start - but also happy with 10am so that Thommo can get his beauty sleep . Although surely a 10am Tidbinbilla start is equivalent to a 9am city-ward start? Well that's my vote then 9am Black Mountain. If the end result is Tidbinbilla that's fine - I'll catch yous at the next meet. D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600

Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)ok,
I have the following feeling: 9:00 am is too early ? , 10:00 am is better . Tidbinbilla is an issue because, 1st there is no mobile coverage (baby an the way !!!), 2nd because people without vehicle are potentially pretty well stuffed - travelling to Tidbinbilla or Lanyon etc ... Lanyon Homestead has interest. Well, if we can meet at the Lanyon Homestead - lets say at 10:00 am AND have transport (a lift) available for the non motorised CBRers, we might be able to pull this off before the year of 2011 I can give Tuggers people a lift if they want (Thommo, thats you ) Who wants to and can may then move on to Tidbinbilla or Space Tracking Station afterwards. Whatdajathink ? Shall we do the above mentioned ?
Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)I have a feeling you are right
10am Lanyon sounds great.
Jeez it must be a pretty state of affairs here in the capital!! We'll have to remedy that and have another one in the not too distant future - also so that ja_S_on can get in on one. I'm up North, and I'm motorised if anyone needs a lift. D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)I have spoken to another mate who is a photography nut, and he said he is most certainly interested. The side effect of this is that I wouldn't need a lift as well! (Yay! Wheels! )
Times? Versatile, really don't mind either way - I am slack, but I acknowledge that early morning is better light. 10am sounds fine, but if people want earlier that is good too! So this is a go for 10th August by the sounds. First Canberra meet in a long time I believe.... I look forward to it, Tristan Canon User

Re: Canberra Meet?? (10 August)Another point for consideration - this time of year there maybe good potential for some pics of the snow covered Brindi's, depending on the weather in the next few days!

Re: Canberra Meet (10 Aug, 10am@Lanyon Homestead)This meet might have some interesting weather! The forecast (http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDN10103.txt) is predicting snow down to 600m on Sunday. Canberra CBD is about 580m, so this could be lots of fun! *manic grin*

Re: Canberra Meet (10 Aug, 10am@Lanyon Homestead)Thanks Tristan,
thanks for putting up the photo so quickly. It was great to have a meeting again after such a long time. We are a very friendly bunch and we had a good time. We wen't to Lanyon Homestead, Tidbinbilla Nature reserve and finally warmed up at the Moon Rock Cafe, Tidbinbilla Tracking Station with a late luch and some with a very nice hot chocolate. Jee - it was cold at times We got ice and snow blasted, the windchill factor was enourmeous. It was loosing toe, finger, ear and tip of nose weather My camera is STILL thawing. Next meeting: 2010 ! - just kidding. Floriade is coming soon and we will meet again then. Interstate DSLRUSERS mark your calendars ! Best regards, Christian
Re: Canberra Meet (10 Aug, 10am@Lanyon Homestead)Golly that was cold! But a fun day, thanks all for coming.

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve Thats snow clouds in the background Did anybody say that it was cold. I did not think it was cold just F#!#! Freezing, it took me about 2hrs to get warm when I got home. But had a great time Tony
Re: Canberra Meet (10 Aug, 10am@Lanyon Homestead)Tony, i'd have to say that the first one is my favourite. Seems to work for me.
The last one makes me shiver! D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: Canberra Meet (10 Aug, 10am@Lanyon Homestead)I'll be in Canberra in the middle of September, anyone want to meet up?
Re: Canberra Meet (10 Aug, 10am@Lanyon Homestead)I've finally uploaded a couple of photos from the day - see them here viewtopic.php?f=18&t=33544.
I think floriade kicks off September 13 - so that might be good timing depending on when you're down. A few of us are already thinking of having a meet around then. D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: Canberra Meet (10 Aug, 10am@Lanyon Homestead)Cool, if you're having a meet while I'm down there, count me in.
