Ok desperate situation here, looking for photogs asap

Postby Aszental on Tue Aug 19, 2008 3:11 pm

Ok.

Well my wedding is next Tuesday, and we booked for our photography about 3 months ago to shoot the wedding.

We get a call today and they told us that the main photog can't make it to the wedding, they had some glitch in the system and the event just popped up today and he has to go to brisbane on that date.

Well they offered for their second shooters to do the wedding, but i don't think its worth paying the premium price if the main can't make it.

Now i need a new photog for next tuesday, its an orthodox Jewish wedding so i really need someone who has shot something like this before.

Any ideas?

Thanks

There isn't any wedding work on his website... have you seen a wedding portfolio from him? Weddings are much more than just being able to take a good photo. (which it looks like he can, although most of them are in controlled lighting environments)

Regardless of how good any photographer is in commercial, fashion or other areas of photography, Id still only ever get a experienced wedding photographer to shoot my wedding as the goods ones are; aware of whats going on, when moments are likely to happen and they can adapt in any situation / lighting requirements. They also have an eye specifically trained for details and how to make the bride look her best both in-camera and in PP.

Being a weekday Im sure you'll have someone... have you considered visiting AIPP.com.au and doing a search in the melbourne area? (click find a photographer)

You could try Michael Warshall. He has done some fantastic work, including (I believe) Jewish weddings.
And he's based in Melbourne

google search will spit out a million hits

methd took pics at my wedding a couple of years ago, he's pretty good, but like he says no jewish experience. Unless there's something super weird like a tea ceremony equivalent or worse you could probably get away with a non-jewish tog :)

Have these people compensated you in any other way? have you taken back your desposit for the booking (if any)? are they still going to send someone?

I mean you only have 2 business days left to organise a photograher for your wedding, wow.

another vote for methd, he's available.

I worked with him on a gig a few months ago and all I can say is that his work is top notch. Like he said he hasn't done a orthodox wedding
but maybe "you can help him help you"

I am guessing that you originally hired Yervant for a reason and the only other people who could possibly deliver the style that you are after is his own assistants. I would also look at your contract as I think with Yervant it might say the photographer or his representative (I could be wrong). I would be checking your contract closely as to what it says because you may have a non refundable deposit / retainer if you change.

Good luck sorting it out.
Cheers,
Vince

Now you say that it does seem strange for some reason.
His previous posts are about Self-matting albums / albums suppliers etc. If this is for his wedding... I don't think Yervant would like his images put into anything but his choice of album company...

I do find it hard to believe Yervant / staff made such a organisation error :P

Well scare over, they called us up on friday and said that they have re-scheduled and will now be able to make it, so it all worked out in the end.

I know its suprising that someone of his calibre could make such a mistake, however i guess mistakes do happen and no one is prone to it.

The Albums that i was looking for in my other thread was for my own personal work, not for the work of my wedding, my parents are paying for the photographer and they are willing to pay his prices.

Anyways this thread can be locked now as thankfully everything worked out.

Thanks everyone for their help, appreciate it.

Im not exacly sure, i think it was in the range of 5-6k for the whole day, having two shooters all day, with an album included.

5-6k for the whole day

is that all? For Yervant + staff? Sounds rather cheap! No doubt the hard sell might come on the album pages then :)

Ye its not to bad, we've used him previously for a few other weddings as well, and my dad used to do his legal work for him for a little while so they know us pretty well.

One of those tasks will be an exercise in futility. I'll let you decide which one. :)

Well just got the proofs, and frankly u wasn't that impressed.

The photos are good, but nothing that wowed me or blew me away. That might change once the editing and the album is done, but i'm not to sure.
For someone who is supposed to be the "best", it's not saying much for everyone else.

My cousins used him a week before mine and they share the same sentiments.

Disappointing really.

Does it normally take over 2 months to receive the proofs?

its hard to get excited by tiny little proofs so dont lose heart. the "wow" factor typically comes when they are bigger. which is when they say..."oh, the package was only for a 22 page book with 10 enlargmenets...you want more ? no problem it costs $XX." lol

the "best" is a very overused term aswell by the way. it just makes the people feel better about themselves. (both the guy behind the lens and the people in front of it.) i havent seen anyone thats consistently the BEST at anything let alone something as subjective as photography. possibly with the exception of Michael Jordan...lol

sorry to hear you weren't thrilled with your photos...

Can you define what you mean by the proofs you got?

Each photographer seems to have a different definition - Some tog's give you the photos SOOC (straight out of camera) and then they go about touching up and pp'ing the ones you choose for an album. Also some people tend to give proof-albums etc where the photos are small thumbnails and don't really do the photos justice.

I like to give out 6x4" prints which they choose from because of this reason and they are all edited first. Everyone seems to have a different way of operating.

Quite.

We used to do contact sheets (in the good 'ole filum daze) but we also did some in a small proof album, which was basically a pocket album of wallet sized images.
