Look like a 50D announcement is imminent. A leak was captured on the Canon China website:

I doubt Canon would make a 18-200. What would happen to the 17-85 ? Maybe they shouldn't have made the 17-85 in the first place.

Usual objection... 1DIII's can do about 100MP/s from a pair of DIGIC 3's, this one does about the same, so it's presumably also got a pair of processors. Which would be a first for a consumer level camera (and would spank battery life something awful). Or perhaps the new DIGIC chip is twice as fast as the old one?

not that bizarre to think that a 50d is a new model altogether rather than an update to the 40d.

i think the 18-200IS is a huge hole for canon to be honest. nikon has a 16-85VR, 18-200VR already. plus the new 18-55VR kit lens and the old, (updated with the d90 if rumours to be believed), 24-120VR. so lots of lens' there around about the same focal length for consumers.

its kinda cool to see canon panic though. lol

Ahh well .... it'll take me till the 60D comes out to learn how to use what this 40D has to offer anyway.....

Look like it's real, Canon Australia has included the 50d in it's product list, with no price yet. Two kit options, 17-85 and 18-200.

Ooops... The 40d is very good and what Canon did with the 50d sort of signals a "me too" thing... With an even smaller chip and cramming more pixels and can go to 12800iso, I guess doubting about the performance is only natural.

I'll be interested to see if the AF is any better than the 40D.

I don't think it will be that much better, the 40d's AF sensors are mostly crosstype already. Oh yeah, the double cross in for the one in the centre...
