PotW 16 September 2008

PotW 16 September 2008

Postby Greg B on Tue Sep 16, 2008 5:14 am

There were several strong candidates which caught my eye for this week's
POTW, but in the end I couldn't go past this gem from team piggy. Under the jetty
at Port Broughton.

Everything works beautifully, the magnificent colour and lighting (which surprisingly
is courtesy of nearby street lights), the clarity, the serenity and the composition.

A really great shot which I am happy to call Picture of the Week.

Image

Thread here and well worth a look at some other shots taken at the same time.

I hate to be the dissenting voice here, but the image seems too perfect to be credible.

LOL is that a compliment? Seriously, ask me anything you want on the image and very minimal processing I did to it (Meaning the 5 button clicks in ACDsee pro 2 to get to what it is now)it, I am happy to share how slack I was when I took it !!..
I also have the original before the basic processing if anyone is interested. (It also showcases just how good ACDsee pro 2 is compared to photoshop and stuff for basic users like myself.

I guess I better go fix the horizons on them all if it is good enough for a POTW!

Thanks all! Were here every Thursday, try the schnitzel.. *bows*..

Actually, that would would be a great thread in the PP section. Now you've volunteered yourself for it. :)

It is an excellent image - in fact it is superb! So I better explain myself here. To my eyes it looks as if you used a flash gun hence the bright pillars. The trouble is a flash couldn't possibly had illuminated that far into the receding pillars. Another explanation would be the jetty being illuminated from underneath to get that lighting, but logic tells me that it is not normally the case. So you see, what the image tells me my faulty logic refuses to believe. Regardless how you managed to do it, the image still is very sharp, colourful and, well, too perfect.

Brook have time, that is going to be funny to watch... It is such a wonderful image that keeps drawing you back and as I know the area where it was shot I can vouch for its authenticity..street light just happens to be in the right place for this lighting.

I'm to be proven wrong, but from my eyes, there is probably an external light source from the right (a club or function yacht or similar), which illuminated the entire underside of the jetty. Combined with a long exposure (based on the smoothness of the water), that's where the brilliant light has come from - it's the only way I can explain the effect - a setup light shining straight out would blowout the closer pylons if exposing long enough to lighten up the further pylons well enough I suspect.

Even if I'm close to the mark, the exposure is quite sunning to get an equal spread like that.

No clubs or Yachts! If you follow the copyright link, you will actually find an image with two carts in it. This has the lighting shown that was used (unintentionally!).

There was also (as seen in other images) a large number of lights "on" the jetty as well.
