Nikon Media Port UP300x Announced

Postby gstark on Wed Oct 08, 2008 8:04 am

Nikon have announced a new multi-media headphone set, the Media Port UP300x.

8Gb memory, motion sensor for hands free operation, Wi-Fi ... not too sure of what the market for this might be.

Full details here.

Surely an obvious use for the UP300x (which has NTSC video input, the UP300 doesn't) is to connect to modern DSLRs and act as a remote viewer for Live View / videos?

I'm surprised it doesn't have an HDMI input!

It is headphones with a video screen built in. The screen is small but sits close to one eye.

It's certainly not for the far sighted :(

I can imagine lots of Japanese school kids sitting on the train watching the latest anime

This type of product has been around for some time. Although used by the military to great effect they have moved on to more sophisticated full helmet devices. This Nikon unit, design wise, is very old fashioned and the market for such devices has been poor.

The eye interprets the small screen to a theoretical size of approximately 50 inches and can be very disconcerting for the user. There are limited video codecs supported.

To answer Rooz, Nikon has many divisions just like Sony and the development of this product would have absolutely no effect on the camera or lens division.
