NightA few shots while I was out shooting for the theme 'night'. The idea was to shoot city/urban/landscapes using only artificial light. These are some around where I live, hoping to get out in town for some more 'city' shots.
Re: NightDawesy, I think all 4 capture night perfectly. The second with the movement of the train has a lot of appeal. I must say that they don't feel particularly urban more suburban but definitely spell 'night'

Re: NightYes, these are very good images. How did you manage to get shots on SRA property without upsetting the SRA Gestapo? My guess would be the current policy of not having any staff around ....
Glen, How would you describe this difference? I'm more than a little curious. g.

Re: NightGary, I think image 1 could just have easily been taken at Waterfall or Dapto station, rather than a context which screams urban. To me, I think urban is somewhere like Darlighurst, with grey being a dominant colour. I think suburban is somewhere with a bigger dose of green, an area where people have yards, probably more detached housing

Re: NightThese are most certainly suburban as urban relates to town or city dwellers. The last pic is a corker, although I like them all

Re: Night
I upset the SRA Gestapo when I was shooting on assignment for an online youth magazine at the beginning of the year. Maybe I should pull those pics out as some point and post them up. It is very true, no staff around anywhere but at the major stations these days, especially at night..... (Night meet at a railway station anyone??) Cameron

Re: Night
Actually, Glen and I have been discussing something similar to this, as a sunset shoot. Not SRA, nothing to do with rail, but an interesting subject nonetheless. g.

Re: Night
Is there a thread started in the meeting/shooting ideas section? I was thinking we should just go and annoy the SRA Gestapo by gathering 5-30 of us with gear and meeting at a railway station and see what their reaction would be. A night/evening meet would be heaps of fun though. Cameron

Re: Night
Not yet. We're working on the logistics of this ATM. Shouldn't be too long, and shouldn't be too far away either.
The problem with this is that the SRA Gestapo are so named with very good reason. I wouldn't want any of our members to dirty their jackboots. g.

Re: NightThanks all for the comments!
Yes these are well and truly suburbia, as anyone familar with Roseville would agree. Should have added that to the slash list! This was actually for an assignment for a course I am doing and suburban was in the mix.
Pretty much spot on. Being the burbs on a Wednesday night there were no staff on the station. Being conscious of the possible issues I was at the far end of the station from the stairs, so even if they were around down near the office they weren't going to see me. Obviously a few trains came through, but the guards wind up down by the building and didn't seem to care about me. I wasn't exactly subtle either with a D300+24-70 atop a substantial tripod in the middle of the station! I earlier did some shots of traffic on the Pacific Highway and I was by a set of lights, I was really conscious of people not wanting to be photographed and, wanting motion blur anyway, stepped back form the camera when the lights were red. Only comment was form a young guy who hung out the window to enquire as to what I was doing. His response to my explanation was 'cool dude, yeah'.
Brave. Stupid. It's a fine line. I'd like to say Roseville is safe and it's not a worry but I actually got mugged behind the shops on the on the side of the highway a month or two back, so I know it isn't always. Still, I'll be damned if I'm changing my life for those sort of low life bastards.
Re: Night
That's a bit concerning. Did you lose any gear?

Re: Night
I'd count keeping the wallet a win! You need a Wolf Eyes Defender 260, flash the eyes, club over the head! Seriously, I live in Marrickville, and the area around the station is known to be a hot spot for mugging but I have never been attacked. I actually feel safer with my gear at night cause I will have at least the monopod if not the tripod, and not many people are stupid enough to try and take you when you have one of those on you. My partner does not like the thought of me taking on someone who is trying to mug me! Cameron
