Excellent shots, Colin.

Did you try any shots with the aperture opened a but more to throw the background further out of focus? I try to remember to do that. They often don't work, but they often give me better separation.

Hey Colin - you did do well :)

Image

The shots seem just a little dark, but if you have a quick play in PS, (copy and paste the shot, and then set the second layer to 'screen' -this lightens the shot, and then set your opacity and fill to suit your taste), you can really bring out some more of the detail in the dragonfly's face. This will work for your whole body shots also :)
Now get out there and get some more insect shots :) :) :)

Thanks all,
ATJ,
I did start with lower aperture and natural light but I could not get the detail I wanted in the subject. So went in with my tried and true formula for flowers and was fairly pleased. I need to experiment with the new camera some more.

Rel,
I do think that my monitor could do with some adjustment to get the brightness more accurate. I have noticed that my prints come out a bit darker as well. I hope Damian liked this dragonfly as well.

Matt,
Yes it does. It is also a great glue for perspex.

is it really dead or alive? :?: I have never seen a dragon fly sitting with their wings down - but then again i ain't seen that many dragon flies!

I like the third one - the posture reminds my of the skyhawk trainer aircraft! up close and personal!

No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.

You need to get out more. :P They frequently sit with their wings forward.

Definately alive and lively. It took a deal of patience and several goes at getting up close to get these shots.
