I rarely use the portal page to look for new posts. In fact, the only time I go to the portal is to check the bargins. I use the "View new posts" link which appears on every page and sit on that. i.e. there's no reason to disable the portal page.

Except as a gateway. It does contain some other useful info. I now have a working codebase of phpbb3.02 with a different portal. I need to add in a couple of other things, and then see how the custom stuff works with that. The new portal has some interesting features - that I like. I need to mess with it some more, and that won't really start to happen till tomorrow. The data conversion, so far, isn't too bad: it looks like less than an hour downtime for the data dump, install and convert, but I still have a lot of things to look at before I'm happy. Sometime tomorrow afternoon (hopefully) I can give a few of you a link for the test site, so that I can get some feedback on it. In the meantime, I've just done a double shift at RDJ, and our streaming tests are now finished, with live streaming to commence at 7am tomorrow morning, which is exactly the station's 25th anniversary. To the minute. So that's been occupying some of my time as well. I'll throw a link to the station into this site as a permanent link, for those who wish to listen to and support community radio, or for those sad cases who just want to listen to me.

Gary, What components are shared? Server, Database? Are these all running on the same server? I can't see the problem being in the PHPBB as a lot of people would be screaming about that. Sorry if I am asking questions you have already answered, I know how frustrating that can be as well Ant.

Ok, so Murphy's law strikes again!!!
Here is the error message I get when trying to start a new thread:
"Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."
Has been happening since yesterday.

Ant, All services are shared, with th SQL living on a different physical as well as logical host from the apache. While I agree about the standard phpbb, I'm using a custom frontend based upon the turkiye portal, and that has always felt slow to me, but I've never been able to isolate exactly why or where. It seems to me to be something in one of the queries there ... And what I suspect is happening is that if one person hits one of those (slow/intense) queries, then that affects the SQL box ... two such queries ... has a greater effect ... you get the idea. At the moment I'm making good, but slow, progress on the upgrade to 3.02. The baseline codebase looks good, and the portal - XL5.0 - feels a lot faster. It provides some placeholders for static blocks, as well as tab pages across the top. The style set with the tab pages assumes certain mods are applied, and most of the preinstalled mods are ones that I have no wish to see here, so I need to remove some code from the styles, and then we needs to look at the Nikon and Canon styles and see how we customise those to to suit. And there's no obvious way, within the standard interfaces, that I can see how to restrict access to the bargains page, so that still needs to be custom code. That's the next immediate task ahead of me, having just completed the rendering and storage of the PotW. Andrew, it looks as if you caught the system when DH were doing some minor maintenance. Not much I can do about that.

Hi Gary, don't know if this helps. When I'm not logged in, portal & posts come up fast. When I'm logged in, everything is slow.

That was where I was heading, and this being the case, it could even be another user of the SQL box impacting your site. DH should have the appropriate tools to diagnose this (maybe not the interest though). My concern here is that you may not be able to fix the issue if it is not a query coming from your site (welcome to my daily nightmare). Ant.

Yep; I'm well aware of this. Yes, they will have the tools, but I don't, nor do I have access to see whom else is using the various boxes. And I cannot even find out what my resource limitations are supposed to be, so I do not know what the target that I cannot see might be. All I know is that when I query the performance, they tell me that one of my scripts is overusing resources and is getting killed by their script killer. I have little choice but to accept that at face value, and to try to identify the rogue script. Again, the most likely culprit is the stuff that I have done, and thus working to eliminate the impact of that stuff is the sandpit I'm playing in.

Yes, unfortunately this site has been painfully slow for a few weeks. I surf many different sites and a few forums and it is always dslr that slows to a snail's pace. I have fast Broadband but that doesn't help at all with dslr. Only just saw this post and wanted to add my opinion (tonight in particular has been painful).
Gary, I know you are doing what you can to rectify but feedback is important from different users in different areas.
Cheers

Thank God for tabbed browsing.
If I couldn't move to other sites, it would drive me crazy.
The initial startup for this site is still painfully slow for me, and moving from thread to thread seems to take an eternity. I click on a thread, then move to another tab while our server does its thing.
As for making a post - slower than watching paint dry...

I hate tabbed browsing. The original idea of Windows was to be able to have everything in a separate window and that's the way I like it, and that's the way I like it, so please... oops... Having multiple windows lets me go to other sites, too. i.e. I don't need tabbed browsing to get around how dismally slow this site is (and while it was good for a while, it is slow again).

I have been reading quite a few different posts this morning, from the view new posts page, and whilst some have loaded quickly others have been sloooow. I cannot see any simalarity between all the posts that have been slow to load so am probly not adding anything to the diagnosis. Oh well the slow posts have allowed me to get in to the kitchen and get the washing up done, which will keep the missus happy.

One of the reasons I haven't been on here as often, in a posting capacity, is the speed. Whilst our connection at work is very slow on any site, at home, this can easily take 3-5 minutes to load up to the front page (both laptop and Mac), and take quite a while to get back there or to open a thread. No other site I have been on has been this slow. I don't want to sound like I am whinging but just providing feedback.

I then right click on each post I want to see and open in new tab.... and go through the tabs, reply if needed, and close the tab once read.

Scott, No, it's not lies, and it is inappropriate for you to say this. I see fast response here, and I see slow response. And it took maybe two seconds for this page to to load for me. There are many factors that affect the site's response, and not all of them are server related. While I accept that some aspects of the server are slow, it is simply not acceptable for you to use this sort of response on this site, regardless of the responses that you experienced.

I tend to think that the more people are engaged in viewing and posting the slower the site becomes. This may be the symptom, but not the cause.
