Am I crazy? looking to maybe buy a 70-200mm VR

Postby aim54x on Mon Nov 17, 2008 1:40 pm

Hey guys,

I am trying to get a reality check at the moment. Am I crazy?? I have been thinking, with the current SHIT PP and the price drop from Nikon a few months back and the promise to hold off raising prices again until January am I crazy to be thinking of buying a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR from Nikon Aust now?

It would require me to borrow some money (most likely off my sister or something), but the weak PP and the decent pricing from Nikon Aust mean I am making a good decision and hoepfully avoiding a nasty sting with a price hike in the new year?

Cheers

What are the actual numbers?

That's what the real point is.

Well I dont pay retail, I can get stuff through work (Camera House) so better than the 2400 that is widely advertised, but surprisingly not that much better (SHOCK there is little markup left in those lenses) unless I can get a special price from the rep.

Having my own ABN means there are tax advantages to buying locally and not from Poon (even if the price was better), and at the moment buying from overseas is not too much cheaper.

get the 70-200. the price differences in currency and local vs grey is long forgotten after frame upon frame of delightfully clear images, and adorable seperation through smooth bokeh.

Cameron, I doubt you will get too many people who say they don't like their 70-200 or don't think it was worth the money. Balancing the dollar, potential price increases etc is a a bit harder.

I doubt you will regret it once you have it. I could justify the $$ so I have grabbed a Sigma 70-200 2.8 before the rumoured price rise.... But my end goal is to get the Nikon version..

It's an outstanding lens on DX or FX.

Just be aware though that the price may not change all that much as there is reportedly a new version due, VRII ? and therefore it may mean that retailers will look to clear the current version.

Just speculation.

Waiting for a new version, although it seems like a good idea, it may well be like the Canon EF 24-70m f/2.8 IS, been rumoured but never materialising.

A new version with Crystal Nano Coat and improved VR performance has been rumoured but I am not sure if that will come in the next few months, or even in the next year (but then again with my luck, the new version will come within a few months of my buying the current version).

The other down side of a new version will be the likely price hike for it.

Oh well, lets hope the Nikon guys get back to me on the availability of this lens, I will note to ask about a new version.

Cheers

Want to send me a little money to help cover the cost of another bag and some filters? Still waiting on a reply from the Nikon Rep as to availability!

Really? My toys are not THAT good! Only the AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 is a shining star! What tripod do you have that I should dream of?
