From soon after 8pm until just before 11pm the planets Venus and Jupiter will stare down from the western sky like two brilliant eyes. Directly below, the crescent moon will form a happy mouth.

Ah, that explains what I saw last night. I saw two "stars" in the west and thought they were likely to be planets, but didn't know which two. They were somewhat offset from the crescent moon.

At around 9:30pm the cloud thinned enough for my wife and I to see it. It wasn't as good as the diagrams suggested but was still pretty cool. There was still a small amount of cloud, but I don't think it took away from the experience. I didn't attempt any photographs - I'm sure there will be plenty floating around.

I happened to notice this on Sunday night, actually, around 8:30, while on my way to the radio station. There was still just a nudge of residual daylight, but the alignment of a sliver of the moon with the two planets, struck me as beautifully awesome.

The planets were aligned above and to the right of the moon, and the crescent was angled at about 30 degrees from the horizontal. I did not even think of this in terms of a smiley face, which is how I've heard it described. It was far too beautiful to be demeaned in that sort of derogatory manner.
