That's interesting. I have a HP 5MP that hasn't missed a beat since I bought it in 1996 and it gets heaps of use.

Take it back; it's obviously faulty.

I've heard of this problem (multiple page feeding) from other users of the 5 and 6 series too.

Which model is the MP? The 6L and my old 5? are the small, personal/SOHO units that they made; there were other more industrial sized units also designated as HP5 variants, but they were, as I'm indicating, bigger units and used a different engine.

The HP website in the states provided a DIY fix it kit that was shipped to you. I ordered like 6-8 of the packs because I thought it would always be handy to have spares. All the kit did was attach a bit of plastic by double sided adhesive to the feeder. Still sometimes feeds multiple sheets.

Which model is the MP?

The M stands for Macintosh and the P for postscript - this means it's a 5 series with Postscript in the ROMS and it has a Mac appletalk connector in addition to the standard parallel (or serial - not sure which) PC connector. I used to have it hooked up to both a Mac & a PC at home and I did a fair bit of programming in postcript hence the Postscript.

Where I get my office cartridges refilled they told me the same thing, and they actually offer a service of changing the chip for free.

I was wondering which way you'd jump on that.

That is a very different model from the L series, in terms of layout, and, I suspect, engine. The paper path - which would be the source of the problem - is quite different, which would possibly explain why your's actually works.

I also have the 6mp - second hand from someone who got it secondhand from someone else but was never using it. I love it, quick, relatively quiet and I've had very few issues with paper once I put some decent quality copy paper in it..

I install printers every day with my job, mostly small home printers or the occasional larger laser for a small office. I have always disliked HP and now loathe them for all new reasons.

Did you know the printer/scanner software that comes with HP PSC's weighs in at around 1GB? The software to run a printer and scanner is over 5 times the size of a standard Windows 98 install..

A bloated company writing bloated software.. where've I heard that before? *g*

The car industry does this I was told. Some set the paint up to deteriorate after 7 years. Others make the parts obsolete after 7 years. Others (GM) set the engines up to automatically fall completely out of the bottom of the car after 4 years. Volvos, well they are the exception.

How did I miss this one. My brother had a HP 5 series that would quit printing with the cartridges still partially full of ink. We could pull them out and stick them in my dad's knock off Apollo printer that used the same cartidges and they would work futher.

I suspect more than just HP of this gag, my brother All in one does the same thing. Cartridges are still half full but it makes me change them out anyways and will not print anything if any of the cartridges reads low.

I've always had Canon ink printers (BTW - is Canon the most misspelled brand name or what) and never had a problem. They have a little prism in the bottom of the ink cartridge and measure the light diffraction through the ink to tell you when its time to replace the cartridge. When it says its empty its empty.
