To sell or not to sell?

Postby glamy on Wed Dec 10, 2008 7:26 pm

For a while I have been considering selling my Sigma 12-24, Nikon 24-120, 70-200+TC1.7 and the 35f2 and to a lesser extent the 85f1.4. I just cannot make up my mind. I like them all but hardly use them. I find the 70-200 a little too short but hard to get rid of as it takes so sharp pictures. The 85 f1.4 I hardly ever used, I just like the sight of it, an impressive chunk of glass. The 35 is very sharp but I'd rather have a zoom. I use the 10.5 more than the 12-24. The 24-120 I guess should see more action as it is versatile but I do not shoot much above 70. I will go FF but will keep the D2x (at least this is the plan...), I wonder whether this would make me see these lenses under a new light?
Cheers,
Gerard

I went FF and have noticed renewed enthusiasm for some of my lenses :D

Is the 24-70 a new model or old?

Hi Team Piggy,
You mean 24-120? It is the VR version AF-S-ED.

Gerard,

Can we perhaps approach this from a slightly different tack?

If you're thinking of selling those lenses ....

what will you have left to shoot with?

Obviously the 10.5, but if you go FF, that will become a different lens.

Hi Gary,
I mostly use the 17-35 and the 28-70 and now start using the 24PC.

my take on this is ***If*** you sell will you reinvest or pocket the money ? its hard to part with so much cash to re-establish your lens portfolio later if you sell all this stuff and spend the money. when i sold all my not-used-enuf lens' i put it all in a "camera savings fund". i havent touched it cos i will use it to update my stuff when nnikon release what i want.

FWIW, i sold the 70-200/2.8, 85/1.8, 10-20 sigma, 18-50/2.8 sigma.

so personally, i say if its sitting there accumulating dust, sell it. its atually a good time to sell good gear at the moment cos new stuff is so pricey with the crap AUD, you'll get a good resale price.

Rooz,
Thanks for your input. I probably would wait and see what I want to do with my photography and keep the money. I spent a lot on software and other things I do not use. I have to pause and think.
Cheers,

Ok, I can see where and why the 24-120 and the 35 can be sold. I would be inclined to keep the 70-200, because what else would use in that range ... and see below. :)

Now ... remember that if you go FF, the crop factor ceases to be a factor. First of all, the 10.5 becomes significantly less usable, and the 12-24 might assume greater relevance to what you do. Second, every one of your lenses becomes "apparently" shorter. The reality is that they will assume their correct apparent angles of view, and if you have a lens that you now consider to be too short, that opinion of yours may become even moreso.

That said, you say you currently do not shoot much above 70 ... does that mean that you like the angle of view that appears to present itself to you in the realm of up to 105???

Sorry, Gerard, I have no answers ... just more questions. :)

this is a very good question. cos when considering the 24-70 that's exactly what i've been thinking about. is the 24-70 FOV what i want or is it actually 36-105 ?

The answer to that question is to grab a D3X. The extra resolution permits you to crop as needed.

Go on ... you may tell me to shut up now.
