D40x + 18-55mm VR for $600 .. good deal?

Postby odysseus on Sat Dec 20, 2008 1:16 pm

I was offered this deal at JB Hi-Fi. Gotta love the run-out deal on mature technology; the new model is almost identical, but the old one must be got rid ASAP of 'cos it's old!

It looks like a good deal to me--any opinions?? (Come on, everyone's got one, right?)

I'd consider getting a D60 + 18-55 VR available for $725 at Camera Action Camera House. But that price is pretty good.

I looked there: that price is for the non-VR lens, the kit with the VR is $875.

Ehh. That's ok, you were just trying to help, which I do appreciate. :)

Not a bad deal in itself, but is a D60 body worth $165 more than a D40x body? Still leaning towards the D40x .. plus, to tell the truth, $765 is probably over my budget for this (!) :(

Then go for it. I used to own the D40x and it was a great camera (I sold mine +18-135mm +2 extra batteries +2gb SD +lowepro topload mini) for $1000 at the beginning of this year. I wish I didnt and I still had it.

Well, I bought it today for $600. Small glitch: it was a display model and they forgot to repack the battery charger, so I called them and I'll have to drop back in there (sigh). Still, it's getting wrapped up for Christmas so I wouldn't be using it before then anyway, I guess.

On the positive side: out of the blue a friend said he would give me a 50mm f/1.8 lens! I'll have to focus manually, but still, I really like taking photos of people, so that'll be fun.

Four days to go ...

Congratulations, my 50mm f/1.8 was the only part of my D40x kit that still survives to today, everything else got sold. I have a great friend (who shoots Canon) that leant me his D80 for too many weeks prior to selling the D40x and before I got my D300.

You will enjoy the D40x and the 50mm f/1.8. I look forward to seeing your pics.
