Nikon Price list

Postby BullcreekBob on Thu Jan 01, 2009 9:39 pm

G'day

It seems as if someone at Nikon has slipped up. I and presumably lots of other folks have been sent an email from Nikon advising that current prices are to be held for orders placed up to the end of Feb and delivered before 31/3.

They also sent me the wholesale price list. At least I'll know what sort of discounts are possible if I win the big lotto on Saturday. Then again, if it's a BIG win, I might not mind the dealers ripping me off.

well, Teds have this lens retailing at $10,600 (I look at it every day lol) which would be below wholesale cost, so, not sure really - these may be the prices after the predicted price hike.

Are you guys all NPS??

I have had access to those prices in the past (whilst working at camera house) and they look right to me.

No. Not at all. I used to be (probably still am) a member of Nikon Club Australia which is the only place I think they could have got my email.

The email was from "Nikon Marketing" and addressed to: "Dear Nikon partner,". The header looks legitimate.

I suspect it is a valid email sent to the wrong address list.

I would prefer that I wasn't put in a position to be taken to task (or court) by Nikon. :)

Fair enough, Gary - I guess I thought that if *they* put it out into the public realm, it was fair game.... but I hadn't checked my RSS for NikonRumours.com yet, so I'll head over there to peruse. :)

Interesting there was nothing in the email or excel spreadsheet which said it couldn't be reproduced. I would have thought they wouldn't want to this to spread around.

Actually, you could argue that this email was spam (UCE) since it wasn't what we signed up for?

Well, given it was sent to "Nikon Partners", they wouldn't have to tell them not to spread it around.

I really am sceptical about this price rise business. Firstly, since when do camera gear prices go up? Secondly, I can imagine a rumour (and a 'leaked' price list) about an impending price rise being deliberately started by a company that wanted to create a rush on their products.

Hi Bunyip, and welcome.

Please observe the forum rules, (see the section headed "Forum Rules" at the head of this very page) and put a meaningful location into your profile.

Your forum name suggests an Australian location, and as I suspect you may know, Australia manufactures exactly zero cameras. That means that they are all imported, and therefore subject to the effects of the exchange rate on our currency, the PP.

About four months ago, the rate of exchange, as against the US$, was almost at parity. Today it's at US$0.70, which represents a 30% drop in the value of the PP. In terms of anything imported into Oz four months ago (approximately when the D700 and D90 came out) any imports of those sames items, with no change in the manufacturer's price, must suffer an approximate 30% increase in its price. This is a direct consequence of the change in the exchange rate.

There is nothing to be skeptical about, and the only question is one of timing: when newly imported stock hits the shelves, unless the importer is deliberately holding down pricing as a marketing exercise, the prices will surely, like the sun tomorrow morning, rise.

Sorry about the location thing; I've fixed it now.

So is the same thing happening with Canon gear?

the same thing with anything imported, especially electronics. some retailers and/or local affiliates have hedged with lot of stock at older xchange rates or are trying to cash in on xmas rush by maintaining the price and dropping their profit margin.

however, some of the price rises are already in effect. 4-5 months ago, there were a heck of alot of lens' much much cheaper than they are now due to the xchange rate. eg: the 105VR was $699 6 months ago, its now over 1K.

Doctor - with your latest acquisition, you are building a very nice setup.
