Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

The silly season is invariably accompanied by huge fireworks displays with the associated photographic opportunities. Surenj has produced an unusual and creative interpretation of the firework experience, all from the comfort of the lounge room. Fine composition and use of lighting, warm tones, tells the story. Great work Surenj, and my selection for Picture of the Week. You can see the original thread here(Yes, there are two different borders used in the thread, I like the black border)

Great Shot! Well thought out and well executed.
Small thing but wasn't this posted 2 weeks ago? (original posted Jan 1, Black border posted Jan 3)
Love the shot though so not complaining :D

You are absolutely correct dviv. However, the "Week" in Picture of the Week is the Week in which the Picture is selected, not necessarily the week in which it was posted. That's what I reckon anyway.

Indeed, an excellent choice and kudos to Surenj.
Sorry to be contraire Greg but by your definition of POTW it becomes a very personal choice whereas I was under the impression that POTW stood for a picture chosen from those posted within the given week by a select group of people, hence POTW and not POTWFATIC.

No apologies necessary Chris The PotW is indeed a very personal choice. To a certain degree, the selector decides on the criteria. And despite my great love of acronyms, I haven't yet decoded POTWFATIC, but I like the sound of it. However, when you are making your next selection*, you may certainly work within whatever parameters you consider appropriate. * probably 24 March, I am just finalising the roster.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the person making the selection has the absolute right to choose whatever image takes their fancy, for whatever reason. Just as it is never the "best" image posted, whatever the hell that might mean. With respect to how the period within which the image has been posted relates to the selection, the "week" has been stretched in the past. I'm not sure that I'd accept an image that was posted a month back, but this image is within the cusp of which I would deem it to not be a problem. And I know that the mods, if they are doing something that they believe might be truly contentious, would consult with the other mods and/or myself before embarking upon that path. That has happened, several times, in the past. I am not at all concerned about this matter. And there is the terminus of that aspect of this discussion. I liked this image when I saw it in its first rendition (which was my personal preference), and I think it's the best of all of the fireworks shots that I've seen this year, because it is so different.

Well regardless of the interpretation of what is a POTW, I am in total agreeance that this is a fantastic image and worthy of the title POTW. The colours, the lighting and the composition are all visually pleasing to my eyes.
Congratulations.

I like a bit of controversy with PotW too But just by way of clarification, when I am selecting, there might be a shot I have seen during the week and remember. And I also go though all the posts in the Image section for the past week. (Which is invariably an enjoyable experience, given that I don't always look at every post in the image section, but for this week I do, and with a greater sense of purpose) However, the "past week" in this context refers to the latest post in each of those threads, as opposed to the date of the original post. To be honest, I didn't even notice the date of the original post in the relevant thread (although it could be argued that the subject might have been a clue ) and I probably don't take much notice of the original posting date (never really thought about it before) So there you go.
