Postby tasdevil07 on Wed Jan 28, 2009 9:20 pm

You could be the first!

No-one is confident before they do their first one, but it ain't hard* :D Plenty of advice will follow, I'm sure.

Cheers

Location: Tasmania

My sister lives in Tassie. It's such a tiny place, I'm sure she lives just around the corner from You. She'll just pop in and do it for you.

Seriously, yes she does live there, but I wouldn't trust her to clean the lens on my spotmatic, and she is probably 6 hours drive away. Still a better idea of your location may elicit just such an offer of help.

It's not that hard. Scary the first few times, but not difficult. Buy the right kit from Stu at Quality cameras. YOu need Pec Pads, either Eclipse or E2 fluid and the right size wiper for YOUR camera. If in doubt get E2. It is OK for both types of sensor. Oh and a rocket blower or similar. You'll get it in a day or two.

To get at the sensor, Either use the mirror up for cleaning option supplied in the menu, or fire a 30sec exposure in manual mode with the lens off.

Hold the camera upside down. BLow it out with the rocket blower. Check it. If it is still bad, A couple of drops of fluid on the PecPad wrapped around the wiper. A firm but not overly heavy handed wipe. Check it again and repeat as necessary. Just make sure you don't touch the part of the PecPad that will come in contact with the sensor.
Easiest way to check it out is to take a photo of a clear sky at f11 or so.

After you've done it a few times, you'll be able to go into business offering the service to all those other Taswegians.

I might have to try & find someone that do there own & get them to show me. I did try it 10 months ago, but i didn't do it right, luckily living on the Gold Coast at the time there were plenty of camera shops around to fix it up.

Start by getting a Giotto rocket. it'll get rid of about 90% of the crap that might be accumulating on your sensor.

But what sort of camera do you have?

If you post me your camera...to PO box 1 Tildaroonabran...I'll clean it for you free of charge. My name is John Smith. :D :D :D :D :D :D

Seriously....you have to learn how to do it yourself. There are many threads on this forum with step by step instructions. It is not difficult.

Tasdevil, welcome. As stated the Giotti air rocket will get rid of most problems, in not a wet clean. Google Copperhill and DSLR cleaning, I am sure they have step by step instructions and even a video. It really is quite simple, if you could clean the vanity mirror on your car sunvisor with a rag wrapped around a ruler, you can do this.
