Short & sharp or long & smoky?

Short & sharp or long & smoky?

Postby wazonthehill2 on Sun Feb 01, 2009 8:56 am

Here are a couple of shots from after the sunset last night.

The question I pose is what is peoples preference, the short exposure, capturing the short half second exposure with "sharp" detail, water ripples etc, or the longer exposure of say 30 seconds that gives the soft smoky water effect

Also these are the jpegs from the camera, if i was to post process the raw(in CS3) what would you suggest I do?
and yes I know I need to learn to hold the camera straight!

I am a long and smokey fan. Love longer exposure over water at sunrise/set

Short and sharp for me, has more feeling of water than just a mist of clouds.

Waz

I'm with Shane - images 2 and 4

The point here is there is no right approach. It's all about the image - one is a long exposure and one is short, but the results are stronger images because of the other elements in the shot - #2 because the floats are really well defined, but we still have a hint of ripple in the water, #4 because it makes better use of leading lines with the row of floats drawing the eye to the small jetty, but you've still got that silky water.

As an aside - where did you take these? Is it Lion's Park at Belmont?

Stubbsy
This is the wharf opposite the dunnies near the intersection of Maude and Brooks st (sort of behind Coles Belmont)
look north and you see the 16 footers (lights on left below)
Image

look south and you see the yachet club.

See if the google map works, location is pin 1.

Cool - thanks Waz. Thought that was the spot - I have taken sunset shots from there before but didn't recall a line of floats running from there out to the platform

Hey Waz,
I dont really like 1 or 2. But for the question asked I prefer the water in 2 but not the movement in the boat.
I do however really like 3 and 4. These are both great.
I would encourage you to keep taking the long and the short. The rflections are better in 3 and the floats stand out well in 4. You also dont notice the boat in 4 as much.

I like 3 & 4 because of the composition
1 shot out of focus is a mistake, 10 shots out of focus is an experiment,
100 shots out of focus is a style!, anonymous.
