G10 or ?

Postby ozimax on Tue Feb 03, 2009 1:34 pm

Hello folks.

I am off to PNG later this week for two weeks work with a Baptist mission. We shall be out and about with the nationals, and will be hopefully doing a lot of boating around Normanby island (plus a tad of big game fishing if possible.)

I had intended taking my 40D + 24-105 lens in a waterproof bag for photos, but I have learned that at this time of year, it rains for much of day. High humidity is present 24/7. I don't want to soak my DSLR or lens, so I am in the market for a capable P&S. Are there any G10 users out there who can give a hands on opinion of this camera? (I did have a G9 last year but sold it to help buy the 24-105 lens. Now I am missing it.)

Maybe there are better options in the P&S market?

The P&S must have manual controls or at least be able to take HDR images eg some form of exposure compensation must be available.

Any ideas appreciated, with thanks.

Ozi.

Sounds like fun Ozi,

A bit of a left field idea but what about one of the Olympus waterproof cameras.

I'm not sure about exposure comensation etc but they do take a fairly decent pic when the light is good.

And after seeing my sister-in-law using one in a pool, I can attest to their waterproof-ness ( )

At least you won't have to worry about the constant humidity...

Thanks David, yep, I can't wait to get on the plane on Friday...

As for WP cameras, I've had a look at a few, in fact my brother has one of the cheapo Fujifilm camera+housing deals, but found that IQ is pretty poor.

I do need fairly high quality images from whatever camera I pick up, as some images of the trip will be for print publications, but the majority for the web. I also do need something that can take images for HDR, which needs some form of manual control.

Good thought. Supposedly it is near in IQ etc to the G10, and just as expensive. I have no experience with Panasonics however. May be a good thing as it looks a tad smaller to carry.

That is why I like it! Smaller, lighter and with a 24-60mm F/2-2.8 lens! but it may not be quite as tough, but judging the damage that my friends D-Lux 3 has withstood I may be fooled into thinking so.

Good points. I have just done a ring around of local (and Brisbane) camera stores. The LX3 is unobtanium at the moment, at least up north. There is a large demand for it which, evidently, Panasonic cannot keep up with.

Yes that is much the case all around, if you do find one be sure to snap it up if you want it.

When do you leave ? Want to borrow my G9 ? Between the D200, D700 (and occasionally the Leica, the G9 hasn't seen much action of late).

Many thanks Craig. I loved the G9 I had last year and wish I had kept it. Unfortunately, I don't think I could get it from Sydney to Coffs by tomorrow. Sincere thanks anyway for the offer!

I got the G10, great little camera. I had tried to get an LX3 but couldn't find one. G10 is great, just don't expect miracles above 400 ISO. You can also get an underwater housing for the G10, which was a plus for me.

Have a great trip,
