Some snapshots from my January trip

First we went to Argentina where I spent 5 days with Southern Elephant Seals in northern Patagonia. Some of you will know I'm particularly fond of these particular marine mammals. Here's one of my friends waving from the beach:

Then we headed south, and spent two weeks in Antarctica. Here's an Antarctic Skua flying amongst the ice clouds:

We travelled south of the Antarctic Circle, and saw lots of ice. This photo in Laubeuf Fjord was taken the day after my wedding anniversary (yes Jane was with me!):

We met lots of wildlife. Here are two Humpback Whales lounging at the surface in the Grandidier Channel:

After Antarctica the trip continued on to Easter Island. Overall from the trip I have over 12000 images (approx 300GB of files) I'm sorting through. So more images will appear here over time (I'm also finishing up some articles on the trip and will post links to them here when they're published).

just looking at those pictures is making me feel cold - even in the 35 degree heat

I really like the seal, great capture and facial expression, almost like she is waving to you!
The second one is magic, great reflection, makes for a good trick photo!
I look forward to seeing some more from you trip down there!

Wonderful photos Dave,

first one really tells a story.

Second one is a great capture, really makes you think. Would have been nicer if the bird would have been flying towards you but still a great photo.

I love the stillness of the third and the sense of scale that the whales give to the photo in the fourth is great.

I'm also looking forward to more.

These images far surpass what I was expecting, and I was expecting quite a lot.

Beautiful images Dave - I really like 3 and 4 and can imagine them printed large with a nice white frame and title underneath.

I'm looking forward to the other 11 996 coming up. Hope you can find the time - especially since I bet the Tivo filled up while you were away too!!

Would you believe this was taken from a moving ship? The scenery was constantly changing: thus the need to keep taking photos.

My busiest day was ~2800 frames! First one around 6am, the last one that day was 11:30pm. That's an average of more than 2.5 frames/minute... Other days included shooting up til 1am, but that day was the busiest.

Batteries were all fine. My ballhead gummed up with salt (I've just cleaned the last salt out of my CF tripod, and the ballhead's getting serviced), my G9 mysteriously stopped working late in the trip, but most other stuff was fine. There are some caveats to that, but no room for that here and now - I'll post links later.

Fantastic shots.

The subjects may be unfamiliar to most of us, and thus interesting, but you still have to see the shot,
and then capture it. You did that. Bloody GR8 work!

Haha, yeah it sucks for most people the past week or so. Ive confirmed that a. every degree after 40 counts, and b. long term hot spells drive people crazy

Awesome work Dave from a spot I wpuld love to visit. #2 and #3 are the standouts for me. #4 seems a little forced compositionally with the horizon so close to top of frame, but I'm not sure how this could be cropped without losing the perspective for the whales at the bottom (perhaps crop out some of the middle )
