I'll probably take a hiatus from flooding you with cold photos soon, but here's a different tack:

The iceberg you've seen before as the Troll's Castle was the subject of many photos as we passed it. Here are a few more:

The swell around this was too scary for me to imagine kayaking around it, but this cavern (also in the other image) did pique my curiosity. Can you imagine exploring inside it? For reference, the smooth ice sticking out of the water on the right is probably about a metre high.

EOS 40D, 24-105mm IS @ 24mm

EOS 5DmkII, 100-400mm IS @ 160mm

And at the back of the same berg:

By the way, all the photos I've been posting are geo-coded.

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10

No need to get out the chainsaw when nature does such a good job of carving ice for you.

And so they are

Just had a look at one on the Mac in Preview, which pops it on Google map, great feature. I'll have to come back to these,

thanks for posting Dave,

Yes please. I've just looked at how much it costs to go to Antarctica, especially from Hobart rather than Argentina

Trips from Hobart or Christchurch follow different (and longer) routes than those that go to the Antarctic Peninsula from South America. Often up to 4 weeks afloat. Not only does this equate to higher costs, but it also involves much longer stretches on the rolling ocean (and if you're on one of the icebreakers, they REALLY roll). They do take you to different areas though (including sometimes stopping at Macquarie Island).

A trip I'd like to do is to visit South Georgia (these trips also visit the Antarctic Peninsula, which wouldn't be a hardship). Such trips are usually ~3 weeks long, and involve quite a bit of ocean crossing, but I coped well with the motion of the ocean and that doesn't scare me.

There is a chance that I may be involved in organising some future trips. If this pans out I'll let you know.

Some fantastic images again. I love the 2nd one.

Did you use some kind of filtre, or used cooler WB, or are some parts of ice are really that blue?

Thanks

I have done my best to produce accurate colours! The polariser on some shots did change the perceived colours a bit, but none of these ones are polarised.

When looking around the ice, some bits just jump out at you as being blue. Here's a subtler example:

Didn't think about the longer route and fuel costs, but that makes sense. I did see reference to the rounder bottoms on the icebreakers and rolling.

Yes please - to me something such as the Luminous Landscape trip you went on makes more sense since it's principally photogs

Dave,

I really love the colour of the ice and bergs that you are showing us. I particularly like the first two.

Cheers,

The files from the 5DmkII are very nice. ;)

Here's a 100% crop from near the centre of image #4 (the one with the ice spire on the right).
