14mm spatula for D70 sensor?Hi,
I've just picked up some E2 fluid and pec-pads and now need a spatula to clean my D70 sensor. I've read that I need a 14mm spatula. Can someone confirm this? And any ideas what I can make one out of?
Re: 14mm spatula for D70 sensor?I went to the $2 shop and got a set of plastic cake icing spatulas , they varied in size. I ended up cutting one to suit the job making sure there was no edges ect that could hurt the filter in front of the sensor.
Then wrap the pec pad around and secure with a elastic band. Worked a treat. MATT
Re: 14mm spatula for D70 sensor?Go to Gloria jeans, get yourself a coffee and some of their plastic cuttlery, I can't remember from memeory if the knife was better then the fork or viceversa, but get both anyway. You'll find that when you cut off the fork part and smoothen the edges it is perfect for the job.

Re: 14mm spatula for D70 sensor?I just found some 2 part forks that come with 2 minute noodles. The handle part is 13.5mm wide. Looks like a goer.
How do people keep their opened packet of pec-pads dust free?
Re: 14mm spatula for D70 sensor?
I keep mine in a square 500ml TellFresh Container (P/N 0015.60). They just fit in the box along with the Eclipse bottle. In addition, I just made a slit in the side of the original packaging and pull out a single sheet at a time. If two come out accidentally, I keep the extra aside for cleaning lenses/bodies. Greg

Re: 14mm spatula for D70 sensor?Used CityRail ticket, folded on top of a wood coffee stick, into a trapezoid shape so that the head is approximately 14mm... hardness is just about right and it is not sharp. Costs nothing as they are all readily available everywhere.
Re: 14mm spatula for D70 sensor?Read the "FAIR WARNING" towards the bottom on the right of this page: CCD/CMOS Cleaning Tutorial #5 - Important Points Before Your First Swabbing. Yes, it is from the place that sells the swipes, so they may be biased, but at $24 each, I think I'd rather spend the small amount of money on a proper swipe than risk the hundreds of dollars in getting a scratched sensor replaced.
Re: 14mm spatula for D70 sensor?
I think I read somewhere that wet cleaning your sensor is not as scary as everybody thinks and scratching it is even harder. What you are wiping is the low pass filter, not the sensor itself.
Re: 14mm spatula for D70 sensor?
Potato, potato. Scratching the low pass filter is not going to be a good thing either - will still require a sensor replacement. Note that my comment had nothing to do about how scary wet cleaning may be, but more about trying to save $24 by using something that may damage the sensor/low pass filter no matter how careful you are. i.e. because the cheap/free item has big pumps on it.
