D70users on Smugmug

Postby sheepie on Sun Feb 13, 2005 1:29 pm

Hi all - I have created a community group on Smugmug for any D70users who have their galleries there.

This will let us keep track of each other's galleries :)

You should see something about 'join community' on your homepage when you're logged in - follow that through and find D70users.

There's six people on now, five are D70User forum members, one is not.

Quite a rapid uptake for a Sunday. :)

Looks like you can choose whether or not to link a gallery with the community. It's right down the bottom of the customise gallery page.

Hi John,
You do have to pay for smugmug, I think it is about $30 US per year (if you put in someone's code, you can get a discount but I'll let Sheepie give you his code if you are interested). I just joined and really like it as you can upload big files for friends and family to download and print. You can also make your galleries private or password protected, which I also like as I am a bit funny about pics of my kids going on the net (probably a teacher thing! ). It has no ads and a really good interface. I am using it primarily to share pics with family and friends who live overseas. I tried a lot of different file sharing sites and I found this to be the best.
(I still have a pixspot account that I use to put up pics for this site but don't put pics I don't want the world to see there).

BBJ:

Smugmug costs about $30US a year, but that's for UNLIMITED storage, and HEAPS of downloads (2GB a month I think it is).
I've found it really good - nice and fast, realiable, and looks good too. Allows direct links (great for putting pics in your posts here).

The code referenced on my smugmug homepage will give you $5US off your initial subscription. You'll note that others here who have smugmug will also have one of these codes, so you can pick who you like the best (we also get a discount if you use the referal code). Just put the code listed into the refered by field when you sign up.

I know Pixspot is free, but I already had smugmug before Pixspot was offered, and I quite like it :)

The good news about our little comunity on Smugmug is that we have 10 members now compared with the DPReview mob who only have 5 members :)

Well done Sheepie. :)

Hrrmmmm - I think there's a few who have joined up who I haven't seen on here though!

Let's hope it encourages them to take a look and add their little bit of knowledge and spirit :)

Ahhhh, so that's how you have your albums appear in the community... I was wondering that :)

I have just added my albums.

Community members should also be encouraged to leave comments for other members (if they feel like it). Here I am saying this without leaving any comments

NOT a takeover attempt :)

Postby sheepie on Tue Feb 15, 2005 7:04 am

Note to any that may think this is a takeover bid for D70users.com

This is simply an organisational grouping on Smugmug. From what I can see at the moment, there is no intent from smugmug's part to make this a forum-type community.

In fact, the usability of this as a community (in my opinion) is a little doubtful, as once everyone puts all their galleries on it there will be thousands of galleries coming off the main page. I am hoping that smugmug will further develop this - maybe making the topic and other category functions visable on the community galleries. This step alone would make the usability much better.

What is interesting, is that there are now several 'members' of the smugmug d70users community that don't (as far as I can tell) belong here. As I said earlier - let's hope they see the benefit of joining this forum as well. If not, at least we have somewhere to call home on smugmug.

Sheepie as organiser of the D70 Community are you able to remove people from the community?

Just a thought if you wanted to only keep it for D70User forum members...

Yes, I can remove. However, I would rather (at this stage anyway) accept anyone that chooses to join, with the hope that they will see the benefit in participating in this forum as well. Let's see how it develops. As it is, I'm not too keen on so many galleries being listed. Hopefully smugmug will further develop this side of things - maybe just giving us the categories in this view would be sufficient.

What I MAY do in the future, is set up a small homepage for the smugmug group, rather than linking direct to here. On that I could SUGGEST IN A STRONG MANNER that anyone wishing to join in the smugmug group also participate here. Maybe even limit it to d70users.com members.

Again, at this stage I'm in a 'wait and see' mood. :)

Hi Sheepie,
Big Smugmug fan :) Thanks :!:
The only thing I wish they had is a "Camera Database" like pbase OH Well :(
Quick question. I just went and opened all my galleries to the group except those marked private. When I went to the community It listed all my galleries individually  I guess I expected more of a generic link to my page. Is this an issue :?: Do you want us to be selective in what we link to the community?
Anybody can view my photes by selecting my link in my posts or profile if you want to be selective, what criteria should we use :?: I just don't want to clutter the community if you are looking for a tageted gallery :!:
I use a lot of galleries and am going through another reorganization

At this stage, leave as is - hopefully they'll do something like you suggest!

I'm going to email them and suggest something along those lines :)

Just wondering...

Postby sheepie on Mon Feb 28, 2005 4:53 pm

OK - just wondering if anyone has joined here after seeing the group on Smugmug?
There are a lot of people who have joined that group which I don't recognise as being from here, so would be interested to know if they have made the leap over.

Anyone?

Hey Sheepie,
Do the people on smugmug actually realise that it refers to this forum? I might be wrong, but the impression I had was that people had signed up because they use a D70...
It may already be there and I may have missed it, but if not, is it possible to include a reference to this forum in the community description?

BBJ, the basic level of smugmug cost $29.95 a year and yes that's US $$... There's a lot more discussion about smugmug in this thread
Cheers, John

Possibly not, which is one of the reasons I'm asking. There is a link to this forum on the homepage for the group, but it's not that clear. There is no where else at the moment that you can put other info in, which is a pity :(

There's not even an easy way to say send an email to all members of the group, which is a pity - that would be the ideal way to introduce them to this forum and encourage them to contribute.

I did get an email back from their support team about changing the way the galleries appear - they said they have several things in the pipeline for the communities, so we'll just have to wait and see what's up their sleaves.

OK - have just updated a couple of galleries on the D70 smugmug group which will hopefully make it more obvious that people there should have a look here. Let's know what people think :)

Gary - let me know if you have a problem with me using the logo and I'll take it off :)
