24-70mm or 17-55mm nikkorHi guys.
Looking at purchasing a 17-55mm DX nikkor for Landscapes and wedding etc. But for only a few hundred more i can get the 24-70mm nikkor. would that be a better choice. Last edited by V-man on Fri Feb 27, 2009 2:06 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Like, perhaps, your question? g.

Re: 24-70mm or 17-55mm nikkorProbably hit the enter key ....
No worries. I woukd tend towards the 24-70. It's way more flexible (bends the light better ) and when you look at your lens purchases as being the heavy side of your investment in photographic gear, the 24-70 will work regardless of the body you put behind it. The 17-55 restricts your usage to DX bodies only, and while you might not have any plans today to move to FX, the question is one of "what of tomorrow?" FX bodies will come down in price at some point in the future; it is only a matter of time. g.

Re: 24-70mm or 17-55mm nikkorI recently got the 17-55mm DX, it was secondhand so the 24-70 did not enter into the equation for me, however the driving factor for me was the wide angle side of things, I decided that a FX lens just could not get wide enough for landscapes etc.
Another thought, the 17-55mm DX is quite cheap secondhand since alot of people off load them when moving to FX, compare that to a new 24-70 and it becomes a much cheaper option? hth gerry's photography journey

Re: 24-70mm or 17-55mm nikkor
I have seen quite a few on ebay go for $1200-1300 which I think is a bit high, ECS in sydney has had them in stock, typically 1000-1300, which is where i got mine. They had 3 in stock, they all went within a couple of days... gerry's photography journey

They certainly don't hang around for long. I missed one contemplating it for a day or two, so after that it was another 3 weeks of checking their site every morning and afternoon to snag one (within 2 hours of them updating the site). The 17-55 DX is an interesting choice these days, but there seems to be enough committed DX users for whom the $1000-$1200 second hand price seems to hit the spot. (DX for me is not a big risk, I like the 1.5x crop and the price difference in long fast glass would effectively triple the cost of moving to FX)
