Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

The Hoodoos, Drumheller

Postby Marvin on Wed Mar 18, 2009 3:35 pm

Well, my family and I are looking around in Canada on the weekends and I am finding that I am wanting to take lots of panoramas of the amazing scenery. I have never really taken any before and am definitely a beginner. This was taken at the Hoodoos, near Drumheller in Alberta. There are some really cool rock formations there. There is also an excellent dinosaur museum. The small white thing in the left corner is a person - I am finding it really hard to get a sense of the scale in my pictures too.

Any advice and critique would be greatly appreciated.

I couldn't see it either, but going direct to your full image seemed to work. Have you got external links turned off?

It's a great shot.

Lee,

you have an extra .jpg on the link, that is not needed for smugmug. I assume you mean this one:

Going to your smugmug site, I found the bigger version, which gives a better look. The Hoodoos certainly are an amazing place.

You did very well with the stitching but for me, I find it a bit unbalanced. I would like to see more of what is on the left or the right. A place also very much worth re-visiting in summer if you get a chance. BTW, for a really good Canadian photographer, look up Darwin Wiggett. He currently has an exhibition in the Cochrane library, that's not very far west of Calgary on the Trans Canada. His web site is at:

A bit colder in that part of the world  Hope you and your family are enjoying the place.

cheers,

André

Thanks guys, I was a bit tired last night, not sure what I was doing!

Thanks for the critique Andre. I was also wishing that I had taken just one or two more shots either side. I didn't really plan, I just snapped without thinking - I must get my head into composition instead of happy snapping!

I will check out the exhibition in Cochrane. We are loving it here, the mountains are beautiful, the snow is gorgeous and Calgary is so sunny most of the time. Good shops too! We have spring break next week so will head up into the mountains again. Plus I am finding myself saying to people "it's going to be warm tomorrow - 5 degrees", which are words that have never, ever crossed my lips before!!!
