Jazz on Domain: A tribute to Coltrane

Postby brentsky on Tue Mar 24, 2009 4:30 pm

Hi Guys! I'd like to plug a gig im organising, in a string of jazz events at the Italian Institute of Culture Melbourne.

This thursday's performance will be a tribute to the legendary American saxophonist John Coltrane with the Rob Severini Trio and special guest saxophonist, John Zappia.
Rob Severini commenced his musical career as a bassist singer, performing in Clubs around Melbourne. In 1973 Rob undertook the Arranging Course provided by the Berkeley Jazz University, Boston, USA. In 1982, the Victorian College of the Arts awarded him the first diploma in the State of Victoria for double bass (A.mus.A). The point of departure of Rob Severini’s Jazz Experience is the jazz double bass tradition (Ray Brown, Rufus Reed, Ron Carter, etc.) with an open-minded approach to multiculturalism and his own musical heritage.

Since moving to Melbourne from Brisbane, John Zappia has established himself as one of city’s finest freelance musicians and teachers. His Italian heritage has had a strong influence on his musical creativity - he is greatly inspired by master saxophonists the calibre of John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, George Coleman and Stan Getz, which is evident in his melodic musical style.

John’s performance credits include working with Ray Charles, ‘The Main Event’ (Olivia Newton-John, Anthony Warlow and John Farnham) and with jazz artists; Bill Watrous, Allen Vizzutti, James Morrison, Don Burrows and Dale Barlow.
His theatre credits include ‘Chicago’, 'Annie', ‘42nd Street’, ‘A Chorus Line’, ‘Hot Shoe Shuffle’ as well as the Australian touring production of ‘Smokey Joe’s Café’. John is also founder and director of the ‘Nasty Sax Quartet’ - an innovative group that has featured some of Australia’s best saxophonists over the past 15 years.

Like I said, this is a new initiative that we are trying to launch, and it really does deserve public support...
Tickets are $14 general admission, $10 for Italian Institute members and students and include a glass of wine or beer.
Its happening this thursday 26 march from 7:30 - 9:30 PM, at the Italian Institute of Culture, 233 Domain Rd South Yarra 3141
