Re: The Winners - March 2009Thanks Gary and the other judges.
Well done Andrew - congratulations. When I first saw this image (as a thumbnail) I thought it was just another light globe shot. However, when I stopped to look at it further, I was really taken by the exposure of both the filament and the bit below the filament (technical term). The detail and lighting were superb. There were many other great photographs there as well, so judging would have been hard. Regards, Patrick
Two or three lights, any lens on a light-tight box are sufficient for the realisation of the most convincing image. Man Ray 1935. Our mug is smug
Re: The Winners - March 2009Great outcome!
Well done winners! I'd also love to see the technique used for the globe/filament winner by ATJ! Geoff

Re: The Winners - March 2009Congrats Andrew, Alan and Ant! Love the that globe...
Re: The Winners - March 2009Wow... I'm speechless. I am without speech. Thank you very much. And it was a real light globe moment when I took it, too.
I hope revealing the technique doesn't spoil the mystery. It wasn't all that special and had some elements of trial an error. Camera was on a tripod and the light globe in a standard lamp. I did it in the hall with all the doors shut so I could have a nice dark background. I went with f/11 and played with the shutter speed to get the exposure of the element, the inside of the globe and the highlighting of the glass the way I wanted it. One part was completely accidental. I left the hall light on even though I meant to turn it off. It ended up providing some highlighting of the glass (top left) which after looking at the finished image I liked. The only post processing was to set the colour balance to Tungsten in Lightroom.
Re: The Winners - March 2009looks like your method worked well ... its a great image, congrats

Re: The Winners - March 2009Wow, thanks. I only threw that in as a wild card as I was running out of time for this contest. This was an opportunity that leaped out while at the Melbourne zoo and I did think of the contest when shooting it, but then thought it might get lost in translation.
