Some B&W for which C&C is requested

Postby Reschsmooth on Fri May 15, 2009 10:45 pm

I have captured some wonderful moments with Thomas and converted them to B&W and added a vignette. I would appreciate some C&C on the conversion, processing, vignette and contrast - too much, just right?

I have printed them all on Ilford Gallerie Gloss (only 4x6) from a calibrated monitor and they are less contrasty than they appear on my laptop - hopefully they don't appear too contrasty.

thanks.

Feet, I trust? For the second one, in particular.

I think that you've overdone the vignetting on the first one; for me it seems to intrude, especially towards the botom of this image.

I would also like to see the contrast bumped a little, but then again I like rich, contrasty images.

Patrick!
EXCELLENT images IMHO,but if u want some criticism, here goes.

1. I agree with Gary, slightly too much vignette, but only just! A little less light on Thomas' face would improve this shot.

2. Two words, perfect and priceless.

3. As per comment directly above :)

Keep em coming mate!

I actually prefer the first one and I don't mind the vignette, though maybe just a touch back from the arm.

Thanks guys - I agree with the comments on the vignetting.

Regarding the second shot, it is interesting to note that this is a crop of a larger image. In the original, Alicia is to the left of the image, reaching forward to make sure that Alex's hug is not to, um, enthusiastic. It gives the image a much more dynamic and different feel. Goes to show that the camera records an interpretation of reality. What would Energypolice say?

Patrick,

Would you care to post the uncropped version of #2? I'm always curious to see the original in cases like this, as well as to learn if the cropped image was your original intent, or if that, having seen what you had captured, you realised the level of intimacy that you captured and which makes this image what it is.

In looking at this image again, I note that I can see Alicia's hand towards the bottom, and that is making me wonder about another crop of this image, perhaps square, to remove that element as well?

Gary, as requested. No processing apart from adjustments in ACR.

Incredible how the story told by a picture can be changed with a simple crop!

I'm with the other comments Patrick - and would like more contrast in the B&W's.

Some wonderful moments captured for you all to savour over the coming years :)

Thank you. Two entirely different images here.

And I think that there's a lesson for all of us in what you've presented, Patrick.

I am with Geoff. But then we are seeing the electronic version; the prints may improve them somewhat - or may not. I suggest to play with them till you are satisfied.

Hey Patrick,
I think something between #1 and #3 would be spot on. To me #1 looks a little ligt and #3 looks a tad dark.
Bloody nice capture all the same.
