A day I won't forget!

On Monday I had the opportunity to meet the other half of the internationally acclaimed series "The Long Way Down" and "The Long Way Round" Charley Boorman. He is well known for his series with actor Ewan McGregor when they travel on their motorbikes around parts of the world. Charley is now doing his own series "By Any Means" and it just so happened that he was leaving Freshwater Reserve in Sydney (near where we live) as the start of this new series, travelling to Frazers Beach on the central coast. It was an incredible experience being in part of the 1500 (yes 1500!) bike convoy. I managed to meet Charley, get my DVD signed AND have a photo with him. One of the press photogs there was thrown my camera (well nearly) as I asked her to take a shot of us, she obliged, and here is the shot:



This is a shot of ONLY about 5% of the gathering crowd, once it was a full crowd, getting around was difficult. I asked the fire brigade if I could jump on top of their truck to get a shot, but they declined to oblige, citing OH&S issues etc..I even offered to sign a disclaimer!

Craig I did. Will upload in a while, I think I only got about 5% of the bikes there, as once there were 1500 it was hard to move around let alone get an elevated shot of all of them.

This prompts a question I have often wondered about... who owns the copyright on that image? Is it the owner of the camera or the person that took the shot? I would have thought the latter as we all know the camera is just a tool. If we critique that shot, are we critiquing how well the camera worked or the skill of the person activating the shutter?

Interesting question indeed Andrew.
My camera, my lens, my card and my flash.
Yes, she took the photo, but did so willingly (kinda), and handed back my camera. No more was said.
If we were critiquing the shot, we'd be juding the camera and the person pressing the button, but more so the person pressing the button, as they use the camera (as you say) as a tool. That's my viewpoint. She didn't say she wanted a copy or even suggest I email it to her. She shot with a Canon and nearly vomitted when I asked her to take a shot with my Nikon, but I did manage to convince her, in a VERY short space of time .

And you would be correct in that thought.

We discussed and researched this a few years back, and that was the result. Regardless of who owns the camera, of the card, it's the person making the image who owns the IP in that image.
