I was contacted a few weeks ago by a designer from the Australian Gourmet Traveller magazine asking if they could use my image of Cradle Mountain Lodge which they found on my smugmug page. They had apparently been provided with images by the Lodge but had used them previously and wanted something different. Here is the image they selected: The original image was taken on my (6 megapixel) D70 back in 2005 and the main problem I was faced with was that they wanted to crop into the image so that the Lodge made up most of the image. The final image was to be used for a full page of the magazine. Without a whole lot of time to try different things I ended up using genuine fractals to enlarge the image. Thankfully they were happy with the quality of the file I sent them and the end result can be found in the June edition of the magazine (p137).

Heeeey congrats Geoff! I had a peek at your gallery as well and must say the pictures are of very high quality! The longreef headland sunrise really appealed, (the close up one) and DSC_9832 too. But then im quite partial to sunrises and sunsets. You're very good at landscape and nature photography! Will be going through some more of your gallery when time permits!

Well done! Awesome shot, love the reflections, I can see why they selected it - did they pay well?

Congratulations - a lovely image and a well deserved selection. Do you know how the magazine found your image on Smugmug - did you have the image keyworded?

Just wondering, did they offer you any kind of trade in exchange to the use of the picture? Congratulation by the way

Thank you all for your comments. To answer a few of of your questions. They did end up paying me to use the image. It was a small amount however they said that it was the usual sum they paid to use an image. I'm not sure how they came across my image. They said in the original email "At this point I am just doing a general search to look for any photos we can run". I imagine that they may have just done a google search for images. Having just googled "Cradle Mountain Lodge", my image came up on the 3rd page. I did not have the image key-worded but did have a title for the image. Finally with respect to genuine fractals its a program specifically designed to enlarge images. Great shot, it would make a great jigsaw puzzle (sorry that is what it reminds me of) I love the colours and the reflection. Congratulations on the publication, it is great to hear that you have made some money back on something you love. PS I had a look at Genuine Fractuals, looks like a worthwhile buy.
