Does this photo have something?

I wanted to enter Gary's long weekend challenge but missed the deadline and as I later discovered, I took a crappy set of photos which I'm ashamed of, anyway.

When reviewing some old landscape photos, I keep coming back to this one. To me, this photo has something.

It was taken on our property in 2008 using a D70 with the kit lens. It takes a south westerly view looking towards the famous Wollumbin Pinnacle.

No post processing occurred except for resizing, levels, and a bit of sharpening.



Does this photo have something or is my vanity clouding photographic judgement?

I'd be interested in any comments our members have

sorry but it does nothing for me, it seems to be missing a focus. The tree on the RHS makes a nice frame but it is missing something IMHO.

If it means something to you and reminds you of a moment in time then YES, crop it, print it, frame it and hang it up to be enjoyed.
I'd work on making the pinicle more obvious - try cropping about a quarter/third off the bottom and about two thirds of the tree on the right and a bit off the top - it may seem drastic but it takes advantage of the nice frame the foreground tree makes, gives the illusion of panaroma by the width and makes the pinicle the center of focus
If you were hoping to market as postcards then perhaps not quite but there is always next time

As the others have said, I think the tree on the right makes a nice frame. The tree in the middle and the over hanging branches obscures what could have potentially been a nice view of the hills behind.

Have you got a chainsaw? If so I would do some bushfire reduction measures to the trees in the middle third of the frame. Then use photoshop to clone out the stumps....

Hmm... I think I agree with the general consensus. If yuo are not sure about a photo, I find it's better to go back to the basics.
What's your subject? Is it represented nice and big? Are there any distracting features?

Shakey - the chain saw chain is blunt, but in future I'll take it with me and chainsaw out the unwanted trees before taking landscape photos

Remembering your advice, I will (weather permitting) do a reshoot from the same location tomorrow and see if the image can be improved naturally without using photoshop.

Hi Graham,

To me the picture was too busy. I didn't really know what to look for as there was just too much in it!

I think you go back to it because its a sentimental place? I know that some of my pics are crap to others but to me, they are a beaut! Mainly because there is sentimental value in it, I can still picture the same scene in my head!

Is that way you go back to it?

It's a bit hard to say for sure from the photo, but it seems to me that if you were to walk down through the trees towards the distant mountains, you might be able to get a less cluttered scene.

I find this photo quite pleasant and natural. It is as if you were looking through the trees to discover a mountain range lurking in the background. The fact that every element in the photo is in focus tells me you were mindful of all the scenery and you wanted to capture and savour the place, its serenity and the width and breath of the landscape within view. Just a thought, why don't you make it into a painting or perhaps an abstract and see the results.
