Espresso appreciationAt great risk to my illy cup collection, I wanted to capture shots of Alex drinking from one of my cups.
I really wanted the benefits of the 85, so needed to balance keeping enough distance away to cater for the lens, whilst being close enough to catch the cup if it suffered instantaneous 2 year old syndrome. It was quite humorous as he was swirling his milk around as he had seen me do with espresso! C&C appreciated I deliberately warmed this one up - does it work? In our place, we have some fantastic natural light coming in, however, it is not always easy to capture. My synopsis: hotspots and need for fill from camera right. What do you all think? Regards, Patrick
Two or three lights, any lens on a light-tight box are sufficient for the realisation of the most convincing image. Man Ray 1935. Our mug is smug
Re: Espresso appreciationHi Patrick,
No.3 really works for me. A really beautiful image. The warmed up tones really suit the subject, in my opinion. The subject has an excellent eye contact with the camera and his face expression and pose are really adult-like which make this image a stand out for me. Alex

Great capture, great setup - lovely *** When getting there is half the fun! ***
Re: Espresso appreciationPatrick, all of them work for me. Each one has its unique appeal. The kids are gorgeous and the mother shows her pride and pose. To me a real good photograph is that which captures the subject in such a ways that draws you into the picture and makes all the technicallities redundant. You done exactly that in all of them, as far as I am concerned.
Re: Espresso appreciation#2 is great imo - I really like the coffee machine in the background and the 'connoisseur' look about your son, my only gripe would be the way he is holding the cup and the chopping off of his other hand, maybe a little extra contrast as well.
nothing.... nothing in the world can prevent this at some stage (oh... except not having kids ) gerry's photography journey
No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.

Re: Espresso appreciation
Illy is a brand of coffee and the company hired Matthew Thun (I believe is his name) to design the 'perfect' espresso cup. Illy then got a bunch of artists to put designs on the cups. The cups are to espresso cups what Riedel are to wine glasses. Oh, and thank you to everyone for your comments. Alex has a real knack for showing real adult attributes at times. Regards, Patrick

You mean he can change mood at the drop of a hat, and never does anything he's asked to do? *** When getting there is half the fun! ***

Leon, I said "adult", not "teenager" Regards, Patrick
