Joining the flash clubI have spent the last week or so messing around with a SB-600 (courtesy of cam and a long story) taken heaps of photos - lots of crap, but I am amazed at what a difference it can make to the experience of photography, it has opened up a whole new world... and it means I can sit at my desk do so, so much more without moving out of teh room!
anyhows, for my amusement and following on from recent water drops etc, but with a slightly different twist! gerry's photography journey
No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.
Re: Joining the flash clubI really like these Gerry. I would like to see just a little more DOF in the second.

It's easy to be good... when there is nothing else to do
Re: Joining the flash clubGerry,
Welcome to flash. You are no doubt going to enjoy yourself. Soon you will take the flash everywhere Sometimes it's better to carry f4 lens and a flash rather than a 2.8 lens Hope you have read the strobist. Nice water drop #1.
Re: Joining the flash clubFirst shot is great, really like the texture you've seemed to capture.
I need to pick up a flash myself *sigh* Shooting with Canon 450D + BG-E5 + 18-55 IS + 55-250 IS

Re: Joining the flash clubEven though it did turn out to be a shakey start you will enjoy the flash.
The next thing to do is knock up a soft box like Atj has done. I made one from a cereal packet and an A4 sheet of paper. Works a treat. Regards Colin
Cameras, lenses and a lust for life
Re: Joining the flash clubWow Gerry!!
I love both of these but I think the colour version has the edge!! This would look good enlargd and on canvas in a trendy home. The bokeh is lovely. Geoff

I like a cereal box snoot as well. D80, 50mm F/1.8, 18-70mm DX, Sigma 10-20mm
Re: Joining the flash clubLove the shots Gerry (stop worrying the story!) and dont ever trade your f/2.8 glass for f/4 glass!!! Why do that when you can have the luxury of a f/2.8 lens AND a flash??
I think I will have to dig out the 180mm and put it to its intended use and try my hand at these water droplets! I have to admit that I do prefer #1...is there a colour version that you would like to share? Cameron

Re: Joining the flash club
yes, thats a good call, this one was taken early on in the piece - I am so used to only begin able to get up to f8 at a stretch. But now with the flash!! towards the end and the second image the fstop was much smaller around f16
I am warming up to it! ta surenj
ta, the texture was a crucial choice in the background - oh and also conviently the Inner West Courier which since Cams picture got published I have been reading
standby - on the 'todo' list
picture --- tick trendy home --- *kicks bank*
I do have one, however the colours on this one are all grey, silver and a bit bland, very close to the BW version! as always, ta for taking the time to have a look! gerry's photography journey
