first post- my cat

this is my first post and the images are of my sisters cat.
any tips or advice would be great. thanks! matt

Hi Matty.

A couple of housekeeping issues first of all:

1: To post images, just place the link to the actual image file (it will typically end in .jpg - into the post, and enclose it within a pair of IMG tags - there's a button immediately above the posting area that puts the tags into your post.

2: Image file sizes should be kept small - less than 150K is good. You can do this by altering the quality as you save your images. This helps you to protect your copyright in your images too, as it makes it harder for others to get a high quality copy of your images.

3: Image viewing sizes, for this site, should not exceed 800px along the largest side of your image. This makes it easier for others to comfortably view your images.

I think that the first of these images is great; it captures the personality of moggy, with great use of depth of field to show the body of the animal without detracting from the focal points in the head.

In the second ... did you apply the vignetting yourself, or was this directional lighting? I think that the edges are a little too dark - the effects that I'm seeing are a trifle overdone, and the image edges could probably do with a little lightening or brightening.

thanks very much for your advice gstark! yes i did the vignetting myself and i agree that it looks overdone. ill try and work on my photography skills instead of my photoshop skills lol

Nice work. Number two looks like I cat I'd be happy to handle, number one looks a little aggressive for my liking. As previously mentioned, you may be able to pull back the vignetting a little to bring out the face just a tad more. The eyes are a great feature.

Number three is really interesting and I like the colour work. You can tell the accuracy of the focus by the detail on the tongue.

The first image on the other hand is very nice...great clarity and colour in the eyes, my only suggestion would be a bit of extra room around that right eye

Nice work...I love the detail and the colour in the eyes...that cat seems pretty happy to have a camera stuck in its face!

#1 is well done whereas #2 suffers from the excessive vignette. For #3 I'd like to see it rotated 90 degrees anti clockwise. For your first post you should be very happy with these.
