Anyone for cake?

So with my better half out to dinner with her girlfriends, I donned the apron, raided the fridge & pantry and made a little dessert. Choc-Cherry cake. As is only appropriate in these situations, it was accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Apparently, it's quite acceptable...

So here's what I know:

The colour on these is "a bit warm". I don't have Photoshop and have been editing mostly in Canon's DPP software. Although there is "click WB", how do I correct without a decent reference? I'm gathering that this is where a "grey card" falls into the equation?

Does Canon's DPP calibrate to a grey reference?

All other comments, criticisms & remarks considered!

Not bad Photopotamus. I would use back to front type of light for this sort of shot... Perhaps some more props ?fork etc

Keep em coming... Also would like to see the WB fixed version. Just slide the WB slider until it looks ok. Otherwise you could use the curves in PS and set the white point with one click. Not sure about DPP.

My comments:

1. For the sake of taking the photograph, use a plate instead of the bowl - the high edge of the bowl reduces the viewing of the food too much.
2. WB needs to be corrected, but you knew that.
3. For the sake of the photograph, you need to diffuse the light a bit to reduce the specular highlights which are a little distracting. A light tent or other soft light modifiers (brollie/softbox) would help. However, this may be overkill if you are just looking to take photos of great food.

I couldn't even see the the jpg url. However, I copied the post into TextEdit &it saw the pictures.
Oh and very oddly, I can see them in the history in the "post a Reply" history section.

It obviously wasn't very good cake. You didn't even lick the bowl.


I think the first works, but agree that a plate would have been better than a bowl for the photograph.
I disagree that the specular highlights detract from the image. I like them.
