Running with a Camera - City2Surf 2009

Hey all,

As I previously mentioned, I participated in the City2Surf again this year and was raising the game a bit more by leaving the Fuji F100fd at home and taking my new D60 (with my mates 18-55VR). I am still getting used to how this camera behaves and due to a shortage of SD cards (GASP!) I was shooting JPG only. To make things a bit easier for myself I was also shooting in Aperture Priority (GASP!!!! checks to see if Cameron has a tempreture!). I am not happy with much of the results but I did promise to post a few photos so here are some of the better ones that I took this morning.

Let me know what you think!

Morning light - f/3.5, 1/125, ISO 100
Image

Boy meets girl (Cropped image) - f/5.6, 1/640, ISO 100
Image

Sitting Cool (Cropped image) - f/5.6, 1/30, ISO 100
Image

Working Hard - f/9, 1/1600, ISO 400
Image

I hope to be better equipped next year and once again try to get that time down (I managed to cut my time down dramatically this year - last year one of our friends was very sick)

really like the light/ shade of #1 cam. i wonder if this image would really come to life as a contrasty B&W ??

Firstly Cameron, hats off to you for a) participating in the C2S but also taking along a DSLRC and getting some shots.

Shot No.1 is 'nice' but there's nothing that REALLY attracts me to it, sure it's the morning light but I'm afraid it doesn't hold my interest.

Shot No. 2 - Good stock shot!! Sets the mood for what has been/what is about to be perhaps!

Shot No. 3 - Looks a bit to soft for me, what focal length was this? I know it's cropped, but it's 1/30sec. The guy looks bored or he'd rather be somewhere else to me.

Shot No. 4 - I thinkt his is the best shot as it's got a bit of everything. The guy in the foreground who looks pretty serious about the run, the background with the ambulance and the other participants.

Anyway, thanks for sharing and congrats on getting your time down. You probably would've won the race had you not had the DLSR attached to you! :D

I am with Geoff. They are all nice shots, but I believe the last one is the best.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I had a play with the first image and decided that contrasty sepia looked better than contrasty B&W...so here it is.

Converted (Capture NX2) - desaturation + warmth + contrast/brightness
Image

Shot No. 2 - Good stock shot!! Sets the mood for what has been/what is about to be perhaps!

I just thought it would be a nice shot...and it turned out! Thanks mate

Shot No. 3 - Looks a bit to soft for me, what focal length was this? I know it's cropped, but it's 1/30sec. The guy looks bored or he'd rather be somewhere else to me.

I think it may be a bit soft, I'll have to have a check, shame though.

Shot No. 4 - I think this is the best shot as it's got a bit of everything. The guy in the foreground who looks pretty serious about the run, the background with the ambulance and the other participants.

Thanks...but that was all accidental

Thanks Geoff! It is not an impressive time anyway...and it will still not be an impressive PB (personal best) but it was great fun. I dont think the D60 was slowing me down that much...

Cheers

:rotfl2:

I like the one of the girl with the blue visor cap (refer to the linked set), really conveys the movement etc of the race.

I also actually quite like the first image, colour version, reminds me of cold mornings in Canberra, there is even a hint of fog there (probably due to the light but hey...)

(GASP!!!! checks to see if Cameron has a tempreture!)

No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.

Nice conversion to B&W, but I think I prefer the colour one of the two (colour vs B&W).

I really like the first image like it is, as well as the conversion. Watch out Cameron, it looks a little soft but I think it's because the size is 800px rather than 799px. When I download and look, it's much sharper. Initially I thought it was because of the F3.5 but it seems like the forum resizing may be at work...

Kudos for dragging your camera along!
