First weekend with new 300mm lens - #1 - BirdsHaven't shared many pics lately, what with a mixture of new baby (who is now 16 months old!!) and general apathy.. I have recently bought a new old lens, the Nikkor AF-S 300mm f/2.8 (Version 1). Even allowing for it being 2 models old now (the AF-S Version 2 and the AF-S VR came after it) as well as being a little bit beat up, the glass is still in great shape, and still very capable of producing excellent images.
This is the first weekend I've had a chance to really put it through its paces, and so I've got a few posts to share for opinions and critique... #1 - Birds These were taken during the Free Flight Show at Taronga Zoo, a frustrating favourite amongst Sydney photographers I normally use a 70-200VR to shoot this, so I was keen to see the difference a long prime makes. Well, for a start, it's a lot harder to frame your shots. I am used to starting wide and then zooming in quickly once I know where my subject is. Can't do that with a prime. I'm reasonably happy with this lot. Once I was able to get the action in the viewfinder, the lens speed made locking on focus very easy.
Re: First weekend with new 300mm lens - #1 - BirdsLooks like you have got yourself a very nice lense there, they are all three great.
So hard to find some time to take photos with the Kids around ( One eye on the subject one on the Kids) "Old school" (Olympus OM 1&2SP )

Re: First weekend with new 300mm lens - #1 - BirdsAh yes, I believe you're right - #3 is the wedgie.
Jim, this particular lens is the Version 1 AF-S 300mm f/2.8. From the information I was able to dig up, Nikon made this model between 1996 and 2001. I got it second hand from eBay for just over $3000, including shipping from the US and GST/Customs. This one is a little beat up and there's a bit of dust in it, but the glass is otherwise in great nick and as you can see, it produces wonderful images. Focusing is super quick, even faster than the 70-200VR I was using before. They tend to go from between 3000-4000 used as far as I can see. Maybe a bit more for Version II.
