PotW Aug 25, 2009

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

My turn, again. Always a great opportunity to review the images taken during the week, and to marvel at the talents of our members. That's you.

This week's image is by losfp, who took his newly acquired 300mm out for a bit of a play, and captured this image of some men at play.

Image

I think that this is, quite simply, a great capture. It looks like a grab shot at its best, but it's way more than that. Capturing a shot like this takes a great deal of patience and perseverance on the part of the photographer. It's not just the players who need to keep their eyes on the ball.

This image is, for me, all about the composition: observe how your eye traverses this image, from the top left to the bottom right.

Congratulations, Des. Original thread is here.

Great choice Garry. Any one of losfp shots in that series, could have been PotW.

Great shot Des! Congrats on POTW!
One of the many reasons I like potw is that is brings attention to posts we may have missed.
Des - if you are finding that new lens too heavy, let me know...I'll happily take it off your hands :)
Good choice Gary!

Wow, thanks guys for the kind comments! :)

The 300mm is a hell of a thing to learn on - it's not simply a case of spending the cash = awesome pics. I actually have found that it is initially a LOT HARDER to shoot with a long prime than a tele zoom as you can't zoom out to get your bearings and then zoom in to capture the image... But the results can be worth it!

I hope to keep improving my skills with the big glass, it sure is a lot of fun :) Yet another testament to the quality of good glass - this particular specimen is dinged up and beaten up, and I think probably 10 years old... but the auto-focus is quick as a flash, and the images are very sharp!!

Thanks again, very flattered!

It is certainly a great image. I love the sharpness and the colours. By the way, the other images are also very good.
