Looking for a D700

This one goes out to all the lens lusting, bargain hunting Nikon users out there. Does anyone know where I might find a good deal on the D700 camera body at the moment?

I think at this stage I'd prefer to stick with an option that provides Australia warantee so if anyone has managed to nut out a half decent price I'd love to know where I might find something .

cheapest aussie stock i've seen is $4200. thru the forum its just a hair under $3k. is aussie warranty worth $1200 ? i think not. good luck searching andrew. (the xhange is VERY favourable at the moment so IMHO, i would secure the super low forum price while its there.)

Nikon Broadway is $3950. Best Aussie stock I have seen lately.

Still ~$1000 more that the bargains price of 2980 though. Thats a pretty big warranty cost imo. Maybe a Mack warranty on a D700 from Poon would be the go (not sure whether I am trying to talk you into it or me )

I havent had an experience using a Mack warranty - maybe some other forum participants could provide some feedback?

Yes I think you've just swayed me back to Grey Market. It's a hell of a big price difference.
Let me know if anyone has found anything better in the Aus market.

Absolutely, but as those that have bought from them know, they do give 12 months warranty and are a delight to deal with. Plus the stock is in Australia so you don’t have to worry about getting slugged with gst.

That makes them a grey positive in my book

agree chris, i have no probs with D+D, they rock and are always professional. i actually have had a lens repaired by them, (85 1. and they were excelltn. the reason i didnt go there was cos of what andrew asked for.

Now that the D300 is off the list, and the D300s is so much more expensive, I too will soon be buying a D700, definitely grey as were both our D200 cameras.
I dunno about Mack, but our D70 is still warranted with PhotoTechnical.

I emailed PhotoTechnical about purchasing extended warranty on grey imports - no problem so long as the item comes with International warranty.

I've not dealt with D+D before but if they have stock in Aus then that would certainly get around the issue of GST. After adding GST and customs costs it looks like they they are about the same price as Poon.

Hmm, we're now considering the D3x. Does anyone know where I could borrow or hire one to try before we buy?

Big difference in the coin required between the D700 and the D3X !!
Roughly, three D700 or one D3X.
I suppose it's down to what you are going to use it for.

That's very true

We will be using it for aerial photography and are often required to provide images for large wall size prints, which is where the D3x would come in handy. We have a couple of jobs coming up that should pay for it but I'd like to give the D3x a try before forking out the $ for a new one.

Note that buying from D+D doesn't get around the issue of GST. You will most certainly have to pay GST. The only difference is that you KNOW that you are paying the GST. With buying from Poon you should EXPECT to pay GST and customs fees, but you MAY NOT.

From D+D you WILL have to pay $3385 incl GST (plus shipping if you can't pick it up yourself)
From Poon you may get it for only $2980 (including shipping) or worst case it will be less than $3340 incl GST, customs and shipping.

I went into the city this morning and had the salesman pull the D3x out for me but it's really not the right envirnoment to make an informed decision. I hate being forced fed by a salesman who obviously doesn't know the first thing about Nikon gear.

I ended up walking down the rd to Teds where I picked up a great price on their last 24-70. I use my gear primarily for aerial photography and the 24-70 has been on the list for while now! I've only had it for a couple of hours now but I'd have to say it's now my favourite chunk of glass

Mentioning above me in the thread was a pricing ~2900 from "Poon," what does this refer to exactly?

Searching in shopbot.com.au gives me similar pricing and also appears to be overseas imports, is that what you are referring to by "poon?" And is this the cheapest way of buying?

Also if someone could give a quick rundown on warranties regarding imported stock that would be helpful, thusfar my assumption is that everything I bought had a one year warranty, but that Id have to contact the distributor and theyd send it back (obviously inconvenient, but ive had no problems with anything thus far so the low prices have been great).

Sorry if this is considered a threadjack, just wanted to clear up some things so the information is a bit more relevant to me/other people who are reading who arnt up on the terminology.

As for Warranties, the Australian distributors do not honour the "international warranties" offered by off shore sellers. To get local warranty coverage, you need to buy locally from a dealer who sources his stock from Nikon/Canon etc Australia
If you buy a "grey" import (e.g. from HongKong) and your camera has a problem, you will need to ship it back (at your expense) to the country of origin for repair. It is up to you to decide if you want to run that risk or not. Some Australian Dealers (DD Photographics was mentioned above) source their products directly from overseas, and handle any warranty work themselves. Again you have to return it to them for repair. And again your call.

Nikon Australia's word on grey imports, here.
I spoke with Nikon Australia a couple of weeks ago specifically about DSLR bodies, and lenses.
They confirmed that lenses were covered by international warranty so long as they come with a Nikon international warranty card.
DSLR bodies must be bought from one of Nikon Australia's Authorised dealers to obtain warranty in Australia.

It is possible to purchase extended warranty from a camera purchased overseas, through at least two companies - Mack, and PhotoTechnical.

The lens I just purchased from Poon did not come with an international warranty card, meaning any warranty issue would mean having to send the lens to Hong Kong for service. Something I am prepared to accept for a saving of $870 on one lens.

My D700 is on the way.

I need to purchase mine this month as I am nearly out of warranty.

I can get the D700 delivered for AU$2980 from Hong Kong, compared to the price in Australia for this camera body of around $4200.

My question is, if I buy this camera from Hong Kong, what will it cost to have extended warranty with you? What evidence do you need to confirm the price of this camera?
The other thing is, that as it will cost me less than $3000 to purchase, will I be able to purchase extended warranty based on a "camera under $3000" as per your site, or should I obtain a quote for warranty on the camera body once I purchase it?

What are your thoughts on all of this? Surely you have encountered people buying extended warranty on grey imports before, basically I want to dot the i's and cross the t's before I am told down the track "sorry we cannot cover your camera as it was not registered accurately" or some such.

Hi Adam, all we need is an accurate record of what you paid. i.e. your record of payment. If it is under $3000, you can purchase the warranty at the prices advertised. Our website will tell you what the price is, by simply entering the purchase cost, even if over the $3000 level.

Based on my experience with this company with the D70 that I bought a long time ago, I would not hesitate in getting extended warranty on my camera.
