Nigretta & Wannon Falls

Hi All, Had to go to a friends wedding today over the border into Victoria and as she was getting married near these falls we went a bit earlier and went for a look. There is a lot of water around at the moment in the padocks etc.. so the falls were in full swing, i have added 2 of the same as too see which one you like better.

Good series John. I like the first of the 2. A little more pleasing contrast balance and you get to see a little more of the context/environment around the falls.

Yes Garry, the water is very dirty almost like mud washing down from upstream as this flows down from the Grampians and even the river i spend a lot of my weekends at fishing is like this very muddy dirty water, but there is a lot of water flowing so so no shortage of it down in Western Victoria.

Thanks Marco, I tend to like #1 myself , water trees and a lil bit sky. took these wit the D2x and 17-55, last shot was with D3 i think.

John I prefer the second one as the sky has not added anything to the photo in 1. You have shown that there certainly is a large amount of water flowing over the falls and I think that this exposure works better than the more typical ones of a really long one with a neutral density filter. Nice and rough, love it.

I like #2 as it concentrates more on the subject. I would have liked to see a shot done with an nd filter and longer exposure to compare as well. Nice work, looks like a good spot.

I really like the second. The shutter speed really brings out the ferocity of the water.

The last one evokes a more peaceful mood. I think it would have looked better with fluffy water. I would also make the water change colour from brown to white. More of an idyllic shot.

Thanks for the coments fella's, well i took a lot of pictures of these falls and were all done hand held, some with D2x and 17-55 and some with D3 with sigma 70-200. I dont have an ND filter and well i have seen some but not sure what 1 would be ok for this type of picture i know a lot of people use them but i believe there are differant grades.

I will have to do some more looking and think i need to get a 24-70 for the D3.LOL When i can afford it after buying new toys and then filters to suit.

My first impression was the 1st image to be the pick, mainly since as glamy pointed out, there is more leading into the image. However also equally important, for me anyway, is the sense of scale, whilst the second image still has quite a bit of the trees in the view, the first really permits the viewer to see what scale the falls are from the full disclosure of the trees and the glimpse of the skyline.

The leading lines in this shot should also not be underestimated, the more I look at it the more I find they are, for lack of a better word, great. That is a very primo spot to be shooting from

I have to agree with Gerry on this one. #1 is awesome and the leading lines in both #1 and #2 are simply captivating.

Great stuff, esp shot hand held.....get the 24-70 you will love it!
