These are some images from an outing with one of the local camera clubs. I thought that I'd try something different and limited myself to only using 14mm.

Steve,

Great work here.

The're all good, but I love the result you've achieved in the first with the stars' visibility contrasting with the white of the lighthouse. (I'm presuming it's a lighthouse ... ) You've nailed the exposure on the white tower, but have captured the stars.

I never realised Wollongong Harbour could be interesting, you've proved me wrong. I especially like the first image with the stars in the background. Nice idea.

Wow the first one, with the stars and the perspective. Reminded me of Defying Gravity a new Space drama on US Tv. I litterally had a brief moment where I though wow you went to... hang on that doesn't make sense.

My preference is the fourth one as an astronomer I can identify the scorpius constellation in this shot. They are all nice and show what can be done with with some thought.

I am a fan of the last one, i bet this looks great at full res.

The third one is very nice also, but a bit of cropping to remove some, not all, of the yellow foreground would suit my tastes..

All,

Thanks for the encouraging feedback. It was about time I posted some images.

Gary, I really like the 1st one as well. It's the same lighthouse as 3 and 4. There are 2 lighthouses at Wollongong Harbour. This is the old one and is not usually on, I was lucky on the night we were there.

Craig, I agree. Someone pointed out that if it wasn't part of the series that it could have been taken on a space station.

Big V, Thanks. The 1st one looks a lot better at a higher resolution. Scorpios is very apparent in this shot.

Biggerry, I agree with the 3rd one. I tried a few different crops but ended up sticking with the original.
Regards,
Steve

Great series there. If I had to pick a favourite it would have to be the first...very surreal. Can I ask how you managed it?

Great stuff indeed!

The first could be improved by removing the mildly distracting dark area at the mid bottom of the image.

Love those starry skies!

Cameron,
There was nothing too special about the 1st shot. D300, 14-24 at 14mm, 30s, F2.8. The camera was placed really close to the lighthouse, so close that I couldn't see into the viewfinder and liveview was too dark to see. I ended up chimping test shots to see if the camera was pointed correctly. Focus was set to infinity so the stars would be crisp.

Yep, Antares really stands out.

I would love to see the last image with the number of stars from the first one. I think the smaller size of the lighthouse contrasts beautifully with the larger expanse of deep black sky - it looks like a spaceship awaiting liftoff to the heavens.
