200-400VR user?

Any one used the 200-400? I shot with one on a D700 and was ony mildly impressed. I tried hand held and tripod, and shot a few seagulls BIF.A few good shots but I guess like most equiptment there is a "settling in period".At times the AF got fully lost and had to be manually reset.--cheers -InmotionAs some may recall I am looking at getting one of these lens so the test was Invaluable

I have a 200-400 and use it for Birding , Aircraft , Shipping etc, i found it took me a while to get used to it , i use it with a 1.4 converter most of the time which has virtually no detrimental effect, i almost bought the 500mm but chose the 200-400 for flexibility and ease of use (by comparison)

It is a heavy lens but i use it hand held most of the time, for shooting things like seagulls that move quickly i suggest you turn off the lens vr as it slows down focusing also camera settings are important and you need to experiment on what suits you, i turn off setting A4 which also speeds things up a bit,

the big thing that slowed me down initially was the weight of the thing but once i got used to it i improved my keeper rate by a big margin,

i love the lens and recently took it to Europe for the airshow season and a 3 month holiday some of my shots are here on the forum if you do a search

PM me for a phone number if you want to talk about it.

I'm interested in this lens as well,

If there is anyone in Adelaide who would let us have a look at it that would be great - tried to find a store in Hong Kong and Singapore that had one but no luck

Cheers

I have used Robs 200-40 on his D2 and found it to be sharp. Focus was pretty quick - certainly fast enough to grab a Mustang plane flying by at a great deal of knots. Probably still the best shot that combo has taken Rob?
