Oneputt, have a look at the sigma in that focal length and price. Great lens, as is the Nikon, both slightly different beasts, but price wise the Sigma is great. Here is a link to a thread with a Sigma 12-24 shot http://forum.d70users.com/viewtopic.php?t=2868&start=0 half way down first page

Glen. Not the S word.

Oneputt. As a Nikon 12-24 owner who had a play with both before purchasing I obviously preferred that to the Sigma.

Having said that if you are looking under $1000, Glen's advice is on the money since the Sigma is also a bloody good lens at a lower price than the Nikkor. You only need to look at some of the Sigma 12-24 pics around here to see what it is capable of.

And before anyone asks - if the server crashes it's my fault :D

I have the 12-24 DX, and I think it's great.
I hope you succeed in getting one at your target price. :)

No where in the world people can buy the brand new Nikon 12-24Dx for 1K,
On ebay, I knew coupa guys play a game by did a bid at nearly the end of the auction to tempting people (customers) to raise their bids, if not then they have their lens back in their inventory without loss.

Gary

I'd get the Nikon Nikkor 12-24 DX router. You'll find you'll have faster downloads and your data will go straight through

Only straight through if the data is near the centre of the frame Stubbsy, the edges get a bit of barrell distortion. By the way Stubbsy, great entry in the challenge, I really liked it. :D

Still deciding but definitely the SB-800...

At some stage I will get the 70-200VR but maybe before then I might need to invest in a decent tripod and a circular polariser.

It's fun making lists :-)

Be nice if there was someway for people to checkout what other gear that users had. I suppose there would be privacy and security issues in disclosing this but it would be nice to try and get recommendations from people who have the gear.

It would be up to the individuals to disclose that information but people could put it in their profiles or their signature... I don't see the problem in telling people what gear you have. It's not like forum members are going to rob each other's houses (or at least I'd hope not!)

Yeah but can you search on their profiles.

For instance if users wanted to aks another user about said product, they could do a search against users with such an item.

I don't know about the searching thing but that would be a good idea... Although it might not be very practical then to try to contact individual forum members to ask questions. If you post a general question, I'm sure those who have the gear are most likely to answer anyway.

I think this site is on the right track for user opinions:
