[SYD] Sunrise South Head -15 Nov - change of date

Postby surenj on Sun Oct 11, 2009 5:38 pm

I know that there will be an awesome Blue mountains shoot soon, but the previously planned city sunrise didn't go ahead.

Where: South Head http://www.sydney.com/town/Watsons_Bay/Sydney_Harbour_National_Park_-_South_Head/info.aspx
When: 8 Nov , Parking may be tricky. I will get more info soon.
Time: Very early, preferably 1.5 hours before sunrise; we should try and do some light painting if possible.....

We could grab some breakfast after.

So far we have attending
Gerry
Cameron
Suren

Sorry to be a let down again, but the 25th is the day of the Seven Bridges walk (I will be participating)...so I may/may not be game to head off for a surise beach shoot...but i do appreciate that we are planning for a sunday to accommodate for me.

I am be interested and will be watching this thread carefully.

Hey Suren

I would love to do a surise shot. It's been a while since I have done one and I definately miss the 4 am hikes up mountains or trek to the beach to take photos

I am in the same boat as Cam (not co-incidentally either) going to be doing the seven bridges walk. So if another Sunday or Sat (not fussed) opens up let me know .... would be very keen

Thanks Cameron, Mozzie and Gerry.

As most people have suggested a different date, how about 8th Nov?

We could do this in the evening if we are just doing some light painting only....

I am an unlikely participant but never say never.
I am due to start at work at 7:15am so I COULD do it, but that would make for a VERY long day.

Not B likely.

I spoke to BobG who does a lot of sunrise shoots. He says to allow 45 minutes before sunrise to allow for setting up & getting those pre sunrise colours. That's what I have allowed at Sublime Point. He also said to organise some clouds to get the colours, but didn't explain how to do that. (I guess he has to keep some trade secrets :D )

Note that I also supplied Civil Twilight (When it starts to get light) which is 5:21 AEDT There is also Astronomical Twilight, earlier, when the stars begin to fade. There is another in the middle, but I'll leave it as an exercise to find out about them :) You should also consider moonrise & phase (Last Quarter) as it affects ambient light, and possibly photo ops. That Web site will give you all this and more.

EDIT: You should change the title of the thread to reflect the new date. (To do this, edit your original post)

Mozzie thanks for the quick reply.

Geoff, the date is still flexible.... We will set the date to accomodate the most amount of people. Let me know of your preferences.

Greg, Thanks for the tips! I think the earliest civil time we can expect anyone to get there would be 0430, regardless of what time the civil sunrise is. Most will have to wake up at 0330 I suspect.

Oh yes, this will be a BYOC event. [Bring your own clouds]

I just wanted to confirm who is attending.

Maybe
Geoff

We haven't decided on a spot yet...
How about Watson's bay? [seems to have a view of the city at the same time]
Other usual places are Bronte or Maroubra beaches...

Are you guys keen on light painting? This would be interesting as we will need stronger lights than the car painting as there will be some ambient hanging around....

Any thoughts let me know.

No problemo. I would have thought you'd miss much more than half a day. You sleep would be completely disrupted unless you are good at taking photos while you are standing + sleeping in the cold.

Cameron, thanks for the confirmation. Gerry or I can help with your transport issues.

Gerry, Can you confirm that you are still keen on this?

Here is the map of where we will meet.

At the top of the hill on pacific street, there are 13 car parks. I hope they will be free at this god forsaken hour.

Weather at SMH says that there is a chance shower; whatever that means.

Watch this space.

It would be nice to meet up with you guys later if your still around though. I'll drag PhotoMarcs (Marcus...new member) with me if he has not had too big a night.

Yes. It would depend on the tides which I don't have any ideas about. During the day time for example 10am the rocks are very accessible.

You make a good point. I would suggest wearing quite sturdy shoes with a good grip.

It's good that we cancelled today. The sky was 18% gray!

But then, 18% gray sky is not even on the list for 'failing at photography'!

interesting, if getting onto the rocks at south head is an option I would be keener for that, mainly since I have never been there, however I understand that bondi is a bit closer for you! That said you are normally up this time anyway eh?

I think, it's going to be dicey. It's high tide and I have a feeling it's going to be tricky.... I am not sure because I haven't been there at a god-forsaken hour before. During the day time however, you can frolik on the rocks all you want. Usually people choose to fish.

It was more that the sculptures will end on the 15th. I am not too bothered by the distance.

In any case, if no one else is attending, I am happy for you to decide.

Gerry, Surenj I will still try to make this, just wondering if Gerry (your closer to me) you can give me a lift if I am able to make it.

Cheers

I am quite confident that getting up for a dawn shoot demonstrates one's need to be committed. :)

Sorry firsty, I had no idea that anyone else was attending.

Gerry suggested that we change the date. He was the only confirmed member that was going to attend. [As far as I knew]

This poses a problem; I have contacted him with confirmation of change of date. I will need to wait for a reply before I can confirm either date.

Please check this thread late tonight to confirm. PS: If security is an issue, please PM us to confirm your attendence.
