PotW November 17 2009

PotW November 17 2009

Postby gstark on Wed Nov 18, 2009 7:50 am

This week's PotW is one that was not made using a DSLR.

But it has some elements that make it, for me, a very compelling PotW selection.

It's a great subject.

It's funny.

It tells a story.

It also does, for me, illustrate very clearly Henri Cartier-Bresson's concept of a decisive moment.

But most importantly, it demonstrates very clearly that the best camera in the world is the one that you have with you. When you do not have your camera with you, then you will miss the opportunity to capture an image like this.

Image

Congratulations DebT, and well done. The original thread lives here.

OK now I'm embarrased ...there are always so many sensational shots displaying technical brilliance, perfect composition, creative use of exposure and DOF posted here that surely 'we' have'nt given in to the humble mobile phone .. heaven forgive us when my 9 year old Sons 5 mp underwater goggles camera starts producing shots worthy of POW .

Should I really just trade in my camera gear for a new car and simply charge the mobile from time to time ???
Not *@##!% likely

Anyway if it at the very least, it reminds us all to do whatever we need to to capture the moment , and that no one should be concerned about posting irrespective of the cost of their equipment ...then so be it ...

Thanks for seeing the funny side

The image isn't showing for me ATM - just the flickr "currently unavailable" message

Deb didn't actually take the photo. When it started to become famous, she removed it from Flickr. Shame. It's a great photo. If you missed it first time round, not sure how you will get to see it

My understanding it that it's her neighbour's dog, but Deb did make the image, albeit with the camera in her cellphone.

I don't understand why she removed the image from Flickr, unless that was a bandwidth issue. I think I have a copy that I am able to, with Deb's permission, repost within my own resources, and of course there's the thumbnail on the portal page.

Deb? Feel free to PM me on this one.

Gary,
Deb wrote "there are other shots she took ..." that made me think the GF took this photo
She also wrote "Dropped it off flickr in case she promised it to someone she works with..."
This backs up this idea. It also explains why it has gone.

Yes, but no.

Deb has confirmed to me that this image was made by her, and her friend also made other images, using a G10 (IIRC).

But Deb is also well and truly over the fuss that this image has created, which is why she has restricted access to it on her Flickr account.

I fully understand and respect her judgment and decision on this.

While I certainly could do this, the basic feeling that I got from Deb's PMs to me was that she would rather I did not.

So for now, I'm afraid that the thumbnail will have to suffice. Sorry.

It is far too long since we have had a decent POTW controversy.

The famous altered road sign around second anniversary time, the "only people in
the loop get selected" firestorm, the "nothing appealed to me" non selection (that was
me actually) which apparently insulted and deeply hurt many folks, and so on.

A long and proud tradition desperately in need of reinvigoration.

Not so much a controversy. Just a missing in action. ;)

Maybe the photo is going to have commercial value? I mean, it could be a great photo for a Aircon advert... :)
